Chapter 8 - My Husband Became a Grieving Widower

The truth was stranger than the conspiracy.

Vanessa Crane had worked for my father.

Not recently.

For years.

Dad finally admitted it.

After Thomas Crane disappeared, Vanessa approached him and demanded access to the investigation.

“She was twenty-three,” Dad said.

“Angry. Brilliant. Reckless.”

“So you hired her?”

“I tried to stop her.”

“That worked well.”

Dad ignored the sarcasm.

“She infiltrated financial circles connected to Mercer.”

“Including Lucas.”

“Yes.”

Rebecca leaned toward the video camera.

“She saved me.”

My head spun.

“Then why was she hiding aboard my yacht?”

Dad shook his head.

“She stopped reporting to us three years ago.”

“Meaning?”

“We believed Mercer had discovered her.”

“Or recruited her.”

Dad didn't answer.

Both were possible.

Rebecca explained the night Lucas tried to kill her.

They had been sailing near Catalina.

Lucas gave her sedatives.

She became suspicious and pretended to swallow them.

Sound familiar.

At night he brought her to the deck.

Then pushed her.

Rebecca hit the water.

She believed she would die.

Minutes later, a tender appeared.

Vanessa pulled her aboard.

“She told me if Lucas knew I survived, he'd try again.”

“So you disappeared?”

“Yes.”

“Eight years?”

Rebecca looked ashamed.

“I was terrified.”

“What about your family?”

“They thought I was dead.”

Her voice broke.

“I know what that makes me.”

I didn't judge her.

After one night with Lucas trying to kill me, I understood fear differently.

“Why did Vanessa help you?”

“She said keeping me alive gave her leverage.”

There it was.

Not compassion.

Strategy.

“Did she ever contact you again?”

“Twice.”

“When?”

“Last year. And yesterday.”

My pulse jumped.

“Yesterday?”

“She told me to take the photograph.”

The newspaper.

The threat.

“Vanessa sent that message?”

“I don't know who sent it. She only told me to hold the paper.”

“Why?”

“She said Lucas's arrest created an opportunity.”

“For what?”

Rebecca shook her head.

“She wouldn't tell me.”

Vanessa wasn't simply caught on the yacht.

Maybe she wanted to be caught.

My phone buzzed.

Agent Kim.

Urgent.

A court hearing had been scheduled for Lucas.

Prosecutors were seeking detention without bail.

Evidence was overwhelming.

The recordings.

Sedatives.

Financial transfers.

Prior Rebecca incident.

But Lucas's lawyers launched their counterattack immediately.

They claimed the audio had been manipulated.

They claimed I had a history of anxiety.

They claimed Rebecca was extorting Lucas.

They claimed Roderick and Gertrude acted independently.

And Lucas himself gave a statement to reporters outside the courthouse.

I watched it live.

My husband emerged in a suit.

No handcuffs visible.

Lawyers surrounding him.

Cameras exploded.

Lucas looked directly into them.

“My wife is missing.”

Missing.

Not alive.

Authorities had kept my survival partially sealed while Mercer was investigated.

The public believed I had fallen overboard.

Lucas knew I survived.

But he pretended otherwise.

“I love my wife,” he continued.

“I am devastated by what happened.”

I laughed bitterly.

“He's performing.”

Dad nodded.

Lucas lowered his head.

“I pray every hour that rescuers find her.”

Then came the viral image.

Lucas crying.

The grieving billionaire son-in-law.

News channels ran it everywhere.

THE HONEYMOON TRAGEDY.

HEIRESS LOST AT SEA.

HUSBAND DENIES MURDER PLOT.

Social media exploded.

Half the internet believed Lucas.

The other half wanted him imprisoned.

He became famous overnight.

A man accused of plotting to kill his wealthy wife.

Then something unexpected happened.

People began posting photographs of Lucas with other women.

Old dates.

Business associates.

Former girlfriends.

One photograph mattered.

Lucas in Monaco two years earlier.

His arm around a blonde woman.

Not Vanessa.

Someone younger.

The mistress.

Gertrude had mentioned her.

Lucas had said they would spend the inheritance together.

Her name surfaced within hours.

Sabrina Vale.

Thirty-one.

Luxury real estate agent.

Former model.

No criminal history.

She deleted all her social accounts.

Too late.

The internet archived everything.

Photos with Lucas in Paris.

Milan.

Miami.

Dates when Lucas had told me he was on business trips.

I stared at them without crying.

Maybe I had run out of tears.

Sabrina wore a diamond bracelet in one image.

I recognized it.

Lucas told me he'd bought it for his sister.

He didn't have a sister.

Another lie.

Agent Kim called.

“We need you to stay out of public view.”

“I know.”

“Lucas is trying to force disclosure that you're alive.”

“Why?”

“If the public thinks you're dead, he can play victim. If you're alive, he's an attempted murderer.”

“So why force disclosure?”

Dad answered before Kim could.

“Because he knows Mercer wants her location.”

Silence.

Exactly.

Lucas wasn't trying to save his reputation.

He was trying to flush me out.

The next morning brought another shock.

Lucas's legal team petitioned the court for access to my trust documents.

Their argument?

As my lawful husband, Lucas claimed standing to protect marital assets while I remained “missing.”

It was obscene.

But strategic.

If courts revealed trust structure details, Mercer might learn where assets and records were held.

Dad's attorneys fought the request.

Then Lucas produced the power of attorney I had signed.

Valid signature.

Valid witnesses.

Broad authority.

My stomach dropped.

“Can he use it?” I asked.

Our family attorney, Evelyn Park, studied the document.

“Normally, this would be dangerous.”

“Normally?”

She looked up.

“Your father modified your trust six months ago.”

I turned to Dad.

He almost smiled.

“Modified how?”

Evelyn slid a page toward me.

“Any transfer authority granted to a spouse automatically terminates upon evidence of coercion, incapacity, fraud, or criminal investigation involving that spouse.”

Relief.

Lucas had a useless piece of paper.

But Evelyn wasn't finished.

“There is another clause.”

“What?”

“If a spouse attempts to obtain trust assets through criminal conduct, a litigation trigger activates.”

“What does that do?”

She smiled.

“It opens records.”

“Whose records?”

“Anyone who participated in the attempted transfer.”

Roderick.

Gertrude.

Potentially Mercer.

Lucas had tried to steal my money.

Instead, he had given our lawyers legal grounds to expose the people behind him.

For the first time, I smiled.

“When does discovery begin?”

“Already did.”

Six hours later, investigators traced the attempted transfer.

Not to Lucas.

Not to Roderick.

Not even to Liechtenstein.

The money path terminated at a foundation headquartered in Delaware.

The Mercer Foundation.

Publicly, it funded hospitals, schools, and disaster relief.

Its chairman was one of the most respected philanthropists in America.

A man who had attended my wedding.

A man who hugged me after my first dance.

A man I had known since childhood.

Charles Avery.

My godfather.

And according to federal banking records, the Mercer Foundation's largest secret beneficiary was not Charles.

It was someone else.

Someone whose name made my father turn white.

May you like

My mother.
