Chapter 9 - The $300 Million Surprise

For ten full seconds, nobody spoke.
The secure conference room felt airless.
Dad stared at the financial report.
Mom stared at him.
I stared at both.
“Explain.”
My voice sounded far away.
Mom shook her head.
“I can't.”
Not I won't.
I can't.
Dad stood abruptly.
“This is wrong.”
Our attorney Evelyn remained calm.
“The beneficiary records appear authentic.”
“They were planted.”
“Possible.”
“Then prove it.”
Mom's eyes filled with tears.
I looked at her.
“Did you know about the Mercer Foundation?”
“Yes.”
Dad turned.
“What?”
She closed her eyes.
“I donated to it.”
“How much?”
“Over the years? Maybe four million.”
Dad stared.
“You never told me.”
“It was my money.”
“That isn't the issue.”
I interrupted.
“Why does it list you as a beneficiary?”
“I don't know.”
I believed her.
Or wanted to.
After Lucas, belief felt dangerous.
Mom gripped the table.
“Charles approached me years ago. He said the foundation funded domestic abuse shelters and children's hospitals.”
“Did you receive money?”
“No.”
“Accounts?”
“No.”
“Property?”
“No.”
Evelyn looked through the report.
“There may be another explanation.”
“What?”
“The beneficiary structure may not represent payment. It could identify leverage.”
Dad's face changed.
“Targets.”
“Yes.”
A criminal network might label people not only by who they paid.
But by who they controlled.
Mom's name could mean she was an asset.
Or a target.
Then Evelyn found a code beside Mom's entry.
S-17.
Dad sat down.
“I've seen that before.”
“Where?”
“Thomas Crane's files.”
Twelve years earlier.
The same code.
“What does it mean?”
“We never decoded it.”
I thought of Vanessa.
“She might know.”
But Vanessa wasn't talking.
Until that afternoon.
Her attorney contacted federal investigators.
Vanessa would cooperate under one condition.
She wanted to speak to me.
Alone.
Absolutely everyone objected.
Dad.
Mom.
Agent Kim.
Elena.
I insisted.
We compromised.
The meeting took place behind secure glass with agents monitoring.
Vanessa entered wearing a prison jumpsuit.
Still composed.
Still smiling slightly.
“You look like your mother.”
“Why is she S-17?”
Her smile disappeared.
Straight to the point.
Good.
“You found the ledger.”
“What does the code mean?”
“Sterling seventeen.”
“That tells me nothing.”
Vanessa leaned back.
“Your mother wasn't a beneficiary.”
“A target?”
“No.”
“What then?”
“The reason.”
My stomach tightened.
“The reason for what?”
“For Mercer.”
I stared.
“You said Mercer is a network.”
“That's what Daniel believes.”
“And you?”
“I know better.”
“Who is Mercer?”
Vanessa studied me.
“Before your mother married your father, she was engaged to another man.”
I blinked.
I had never heard that.
“His name was Adrian Mercer.”
The room seemed to contract.
“Mercer is a person.”
“Originally.”
“What happened to him?”
“He disappeared in 1996.”
Before I was born.
“Why?”
“Because he was stealing from people more dangerous than him.”
“What does that have to do with Mom?”
“She helped expose him.”
My pulse climbed.
Vanessa continued.
“Adrian Mercer ran offshore accounts for organized crime, corrupt executives, and politicians. Your mother discovered what he was doing.”
“How?”
“She worked for the accounting firm handling some of his companies.”
I couldn't reconcile this with the mother I knew.
The woman who gardened.
Hosted charity lunches.
Cried at old movies.
“She turned evidence over to investigators?”
“Yes.”
“And he disappeared?”
“After threatening to kill her.”
A cold chill moved through me.
“Is he alive?”
Vanessa smiled sadly.
“That depends on who you ask.”
“What do you think?”
“I think Mercer stopped being a man and became a brand.”
Meaning people continued his system.
His name.
His network.
“Charles?”
“Charles was recruited later.”
“Roderick?”
“Money handler.”
“Captain Rowan?”
“Transport.”
“Lucas?”
Vanessa paused.
“Lucas was raised for it.”
I stared.
“Raised?”
“Roderick trained him young. Charm. Languages. Finance. Social engineering.”
I felt nauseous.
My marriage had been an assignment.
“Why me?”
“Because Daniel Sterling held something Mercer wanted.”
“The vault.”
“Not money.”
“What?”
Vanessa leaned closer.
“Evidence.”
My father had preserved Thomas Crane's original files.
“Where?”
Vanessa smiled.
“If I knew, I wouldn't have spent twelve years looking.”
“Then why marry me?”
“Lucas believed Daniel would eventually transfer emergency access to you.”
“Access to what?”
“A physical archive.”
No cloud.
No servers.
Something tangible.
“Did my father know?”
“He suspected Mercer would eventually come for the archive.”
“And still he let me marry Lucas.”
Vanessa's eyes softened.
“He didn't understand Lucas's role until too late.”
I hated that this defended Dad.
“What about Rebecca?”
“I saved her because Lucas became sloppy.”
“Why didn't you expose him?”
“If Lucas went to prison then, Roderick disappeared and Mercer rebuilt.”
“So Rebecca became bait.”
Vanessa didn't deny it.
Anger burned through me.
“You used her.”
“Yes.”
“You used me.”
A pause.
“Yes.”
I stood.
Vanessa remained seated.
“If you leave now, you'll miss the part that keeps your mother alive.”
I stopped.
“What?”
“Charles knows S-17 is still active.”
“What does that mean?”
Vanessa's voice lowered.
“It means your mother is not supposed to survive June seventeenth.”
Five days.
Board vote date.
Not a coincidence.
I sat again.
“What happens June seventeenth?”
Vanessa looked through the glass as if she could see my father.
“Daniel's merger vote was never the real target.”
“Then what was?”
“Your parents' anniversary gala.”
I had forgotten.
June seventeenth.
Thirty-five years.
They had planned a private gala at the Sterling estate.
Hundreds of guests.
Political figures.
Executives.
Friends.
Charles.
Everyone.
“What are they planning?”
“I don't know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because if I knew, I wouldn't be here.”
She leaned closer.
“I would be running.”
That evening, Dad canceled the gala.
Publicly, no reason was given.
Within twenty minutes, Charles Avery called Mom.
She didn't answer.
Then a message arrived.
MARIA, YOU CANNOT CANCEL THIRTY-FIVE YEARS OF HISTORY.
Mom stared at it.
I looked at Dad.
Only close friends called my mother Maria instead of Marie.
Charles knew.
Then a second message arrived.
THIS ENDS WHERE IT BEGAN.
Attached was an old photograph.
Mom at twenty-four.
Beside her stood a handsome dark-haired man.
Adrian Mercer.
Behind them was a building.
A hotel.
Dad recognized it instantly.
The Grand Montrose.
Zurich.
May you like
And according to the timestamp printed beneath the image, the photograph was taken two years after Adrian Mercer supposedly disappeared.
