Chapter 15 - The Man My Father Had Been Watching for Twelve Years

Alexander wanted the ballroom.

Not escape.

Not money.

An audience.

That was his weakness.

Dad had always said narcissism made smart men predictable.

I never thought he was describing his brother.

Federal agents allowed Alexander inside because the transmitter threat appeared credible.

Later we learned it was partly bluff.

At the time, nobody knew.

Two hundred guests stood silent as Alexander entered with Dad.

Whispers rippled.

Some older executives recognized him.

One woman dropped her glass.

“Alex?”

He smiled.

“It's been a long time.”

Cameras had been banned from the ballroom.

Alexander didn't care.

He had his own stream.

A tiny camera pinned inside his jacket was broadcasting somewhere.

“Turn it off,” Agent Kim ordered.

“No.”

“You are surrounded.”

“Yes.”

Alexander looked delighted.

“History deserves witnesses.”

He faced Dad.

“Tell them.”

Dad stood beside Mom.

“Tell them what?”

“How Sterling Global survived 1998.”

Silence.

Alexander looked at the guests.

“My brother likes to present himself as an honorable businessman.”

Dad said nothing.

“But in 1998, his company was collapsing.”

I had never heard this.

Mom closed her eyes.

Alexander continued.

“Debt. Lawsuits. Failed expansion. Daniel needed capital.”

Dad finally spoke.

“And you provided it.”

My stomach tightened.

Alexander smiled.

“Thirty million dollars.”

Mercer money.

Dad looked at me.

“I didn't know where it came from.”

Alexander laughed.

“That's the lie he tells himself.”

“Charles arranged emergency financing.”

Everyone turned toward Charles.

He looked destroyed.

Alexander nodded.

“Charles was useful.”

Dad's jaw tightened.

“I discovered the source months later.”

“And did you return it?”

“No.”

The room shifted.

Truth.

Not clean.

Not perfect.

Dad had used criminal money.

“What did you do?” I asked.

Dad answered me, not Alexander.

“I documented every dollar. Then spent twelve years trying to dismantle the network that supplied it.”

“Why not tell authorities?”

“I did.”

“Then why hide it?”

“Because the original money flowed through shell companies tied to public pension funds. Revealing everything immediately would have destroyed thousands of innocent people's savings.”

Alexander clapped slowly.

“Always the hero.”

Dad looked at him.

“I protected people while building a case.”

“You protected Sterling.”

“Both.”

There it was.

Not saint.

Not villain.

Complicated.

Alexander wanted a scandal.

Dad gave him truth.

That weakened him.

I saw it immediately.

Alexander expected denial.

Rage.

Shame.

Instead, Dad admitted his choices.

Guests began whispering differently.

Alexander's smile faded.

Then Mom stepped forward.

“You threatened me thirty years ago.”

Alexander looked at her.

“No. Adrian did.”

“You became worse than him.”

Alexander's face hardened.

“You took my brother.”

“I married him.”

“You convinced him I was dangerous.”

“You were dangerous.”

For the first time, Alexander's composure cracked.

This wasn't about Dad's company.

Not entirely.

He had resented Dad for everything.

Inheritance.

Success.

Mom.

Life itself.

The empire was revenge wearing a business suit.

Then Gertrude spoke.

“You promised Roderick we'd be protected.”

Alexander turned.

“You were.”

“You used my son.”

“Your son volunteered.”

“He was twenty.”

“And ambitious.”

Gertrude began crying.

“I helped him become a monster.”

Alexander shrugged.

“That is parenting.”

The cruelty shocked even him.

The room fell silent.

Then my voice came through the ballroom speakers.

Not live.

A recording.

Lucas on the yacht.

“Two pills every night... by midnight she won't even be able to keep her eyes open.”

Alexander looked toward the sound system.

Then Roderick's voice.

Gertrude.

Rowan.

Every piece of the conspiracy.

Agent Kim had begun releasing controlled evidence to Alexander's broadcast feed.

If he wanted history witnessed, we would show history.

Alexander's face changed.

“What are you doing?”

I stepped closer.

“Giving you your audience.”

Then another recording played.

Vanessa and Lucas.

“The plan is for everyone to think she dies.”

Alexander's expression sharpened.

Vanessa had betrayed him.

Then Rowan's federal statement.

“Alexander Sterling directs Mercer operations.”

Now Alexander moved.

He grabbed me.

Fast.

Faster than a man his age should have.

An arm around my neck.

A blade appeared.

Gasps.

Federal agents raised weapons.

Dad froze.

Alexander backed toward the terrace.

“You ruined everything.”

I almost laughed.

“No.”

He tightened his grip.

“You were supposed to be useful.”

“I was.”

He paused.

I whispered:

“I led you here.”

His eyes narrowed.

Then the ballroom screens changed.

Bank accounts.

Names.

Transfers.

The legal discovery triggered by Lucas's power of attorney.

Mercer's financial network.

Live.

Being transmitted to federal servers, European regulators, and investigative journalists.

Alexander stared.

“You don't have authority.”

I smiled.

“Actually, I do.”

Page nine.

The signature Lucas forgot to read.

Every account his attempted theft touched had become discoverable.

Alexander's empire wasn't being exposed because Dad defeated him.

Or the FBI.

Or Vanessa.

It was collapsing because Lucas got greedy.

Alexander looked almost impressed.

Then furious.

He dragged me toward the terrace.

“Then you die with it.”

Before anyone could move, Charles stepped between us.

Alexander stabbed forward.

Charles caught his wrist.

The two men struggled.

I broke free.

Agents swarmed.

Alexander hit the floor.

The transmitter tore loose from his chest.

Nothing happened.

No data dump.

No explosion.

Bluff.

Agent Kim cuffed him.

Dad stood over his brother.

Alexander looked up.

“All these years.”

Dad said quietly:

“All these years, you could have come home.”

Alexander laughed.

“To what? Your leftovers?”

Dad's face filled with sadness.

“You still don't understand.”

“What?”

“No one stole your life.”

Alexander stopped smiling.

“You threw it away.”

Federal agents took him.

The ballroom remained silent.

I thought it was over.

Then Elena's radio crackled.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

She looked at me.

“Lucas is gone.”

My heart stopped.

“Gone where?”

“He escaped transport twenty minutes ago.”

May you like

And the vehicle he stole was heading directly toward the estate.
