Chapter 13 - My Mother-in-Law Finally Broke

Alexander Sterling died when my father was nineteen.

At least that was what Dad had believed.

Car accident.

Colorado.

No body shown to the family because of severe burns.

The funeral used a closed casket.

A death certificate existed.

Insurance paid.

Everything official.

Except now Alexander's name appeared on accounts twenty years after his death.

Dad sat alone for a long time.

I finally asked:

“What was he like?”

“Brilliant.”

Dad's voice sounded distant.

“Restless. Angry. He thought our father favored me.”

“Did he?”

Dad gave a tired smile.

“Probably.”

“What happened before the accident?”

“We fought.”

“About?”

“Money.”

Of course.

“Alexander wanted to sell his share of the family company. My father refused.”

“And then he died.”

“Three weeks later.”

Mom touched Dad's shoulder.

“What if he didn't?”

Nobody answered.

Then Agent Kim called.

Gertrude had more.

After hours of questioning, she finally broke completely.

Not the calculated cooperation of someone bargaining.

An emotional collapse.

She admitted everything she knew.

Roderick met a man calling himself Alexander in 1998.

That man introduced him to the network.

Not Adrian Mercer.

Alexander.

“What did he look like?” Kim asked.

Gertrude described a man now in his sixties.

Tall.

Gray hair.

Scar along his jaw.

Dad closed his eyes.

“That's him.”

Alive.

His brother had survived.

Or faked his death.

Why?

Money.

Revenge.

Power.

Maybe all three.

Alexander had used Adrian Mercer's criminal framework after Mercer disappeared.

He rebuilt the network under Mercer's name.

For decades, Dad had been hunting a ghost network controlled by his own brother.

Everything suddenly aligned.

Why Mercer targeted Sterling Global.

Why Dad's family received special attention.

Why I became leverage.

It wasn't just business.

It was family.

Lucas had married me because Alexander wanted access to Dad's archive.

Maybe he also wanted to destroy Dad emotionally.

What better way than having his niece killed by the man she married?

The cruelty became personal.

Gertrude gave investigators the location of one Mercer safe property near Lake Geneva.

Swiss authorities searched it.

Empty.

Recently abandoned.

But they found photographs.

Hundreds.

My family.

Dad.

Mom.

Me.

My childhood school.

College.

Graduation.

Birthdays.

The wedding.

One photograph showed Alexander standing fifty feet behind me at my college graduation.

He had been there.

Watching.

Another showed him outside our family home.

Christmas morning.

Ten years ago.

He had lived in the edges of our lives like a shadow.

The most disturbing photograph came last.

My wedding.

Alexander wearing a waiter's uniform.

Standing behind the champagne bar.

He had watched me marry Lucas.

Rowan had said I met Mercer at my wedding.

He meant Alexander.

My uncle.

Alive.

I couldn't decide whether to laugh or scream.

Dad stared at the photo.

“He wanted me to see him.”

“What?”

“He knew eventually we'd find this.”

“You think he wanted discovery?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Dad's expression hardened.

“Because Alexander never wanted money as much as he wanted recognition.”

For decades, Dad believed him dead.

Alexander wanted to return dramatically.

To prove he had built something larger than Sterling Global.

A criminal empire hiding inside respectable institutions.

Agent Kim's team traced Alexander's historical movements.

Multiple aliases.

Multiple passports.

A residence in Portugal.

A yacht in Monaco.

A corporate office in Singapore.

Then a current location.

Maybe.

A private airfield outside Vancouver had logged a passenger matching his biometric profile.

Destination?

San Diego.

He was coming back.

“Why?” Mom whispered.

Dad knew.

“For the anniversary.”

June seventeenth.

Two days away.

The gala we canceled.

Alexander expected a stage.

We had removed it.

So Dad proposed rebuilding it.

Same estate.

Same guest list.

Same anniversary event.

But now every server would be an agent.

Every camera monitored.

Every entrance secured.

Bait.

Mom hated it.

I agreed.

Not because I wanted drama.

Because this had to end.

For thirty years, our family had reacted.

Hidden.

Protected.

Investigated.

Alexander controlled the pace.

Now we would.

The gala announcement went public.

DANIEL AND MARIA STERLING ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION TO PROCEED.

Media called it courageous.

They didn't know it was a trap.

Then something unexpected happened.

Gertrude requested to attend.

Absolutely not as a guest.

As bait.

“Alexander trusts that I'm frightened,” she explained.

“He thinks I'll run to him.”

“Why would he contact you?” I asked.

“Because Roderick failed.”

“And?”

“He needs someone near Lucas.”

“Lucas is cooperating.”

“He doesn't know that.”

Good point.

Gertrude offered to wear a wire.

I studied her through the meeting room glass.

This woman had helped plan my murder.

Part of me wanted her punished forever.

She would be.

Cooperation didn't erase guilt.

But perhaps she could prevent more deaths.

“Why are you doing this?” I asked.

Gertrude looked down.

“Lucas told Rowan to take me.”

I remembered.

Let him take her.

“When my son was willing to let me die, I understood what I had become.”

Her eyes filled.

“I raised him to believe survival mattered more than loyalty.”

She looked at me.

“I don't expect forgiveness.”

“Good.”

“I only want one useful thing to come from what's left of my life.”

For the first time, I believed her.

Not trusted.

Believed.

The gala preparations began.

Then, twenty-four hours before the event, Gertrude received a message on an old encrypted device surrendered to investigators.

One sentence.

BRING THE GIRL TO THE GARDEN AT 11:30.

The girl.

Me.

Below it:

COME ALONE OR LUCAS DIES BEFORE MIDNIGHT.

Gertrude stared at me.

I looked at Agent Kim.

Alexander knew Lucas was vulnerable.

But he didn't know Lucas had turned.

That gave us an advantage.

Unless Alexander already knew that too.

At 11:30 the next night, someone would enter my parents' garden expecting Gertrude to deliver me.

We planned to make sure he found exactly what he wanted.

May you like

Me.
