Chapter 10 - The Betrayal Inside the Ashford Family

Graham had been twelve when his mother died.

The official story was an accident.

A winter road.

Black ice.

A car through a barrier.

But Graham had never believed it.

“She discovered Sebastian was stealing from the family companies,” he told me.

“August knew?”

“Not until later.”

“And Sebastian?”

“He convinced everyone she was unstable.”

I understood suddenly why Graham valued control.

Why emotion frightened him.

Why he'd mistaken distance for protection.

His mother had tried to protect him and died.

So when Owen was born, Graham had done the only thing his terrified mind understood.

Push us away.

It didn't excuse him.

But finally, it explained him.

“We end this,” I said.

Graham looked at me.

“How?”

“We stop running.”

Daniel helped arrange the legal strategy.

Vanessa, realizing Sebastian planned to sacrifice her if the scheme collapsed, turned over years of records.

Bank transfers.

Messages.

Audio.

Enough to trigger investigations into Sebastian's legitimate financial crimes.

But Sebastian still controlled powerful people.

So we gave him what he wanted.

A meeting.

I walked into the Ashford corporate headquarters beside Graham.

For years, I had entered those rooms as his quiet wife.

That day, everyone stood when I entered.

Sebastian waited in the boardroom.

“You look like August,” he told Owen.

My son hid behind Graham.

Sebastian smiled.

“Interesting.”

“What?” Graham asked.

“You finally learned.”

“Learned what?”

“What August spent his life trying to teach you. Power isn't having nothing to lose.”

Sebastian looked at me.

“It's deciding what you're willing to lose.”

I placed documents on the table.

“My answer is nothing.”

Sebastian laughed.

“You think paperwork defeats families like ours?”

“No.”

I looked toward Daniel.

“Evidence does.”

Federal financial investigators entered from the adjoining conference room.

Sebastian's expression finally changed.

Vanessa followed them.

“You.”

She smiled sadly.

“You were going to blame everything on me.”

Sebastian looked at Graham.

“You'd let outsiders dismantle your own family?”

Graham answered without hesitation.

“You stopped being my family when you threatened my son.”

Sebastian's gaze moved toward Owen.

Then Claire.

Then back to Graham.

“You'll regret choosing weakness.”

Graham took my hand.

“No.”

His fingers tightened around mine.

“I regret choosing power.”

Sebastian was escorted away.

But as he reached the doorway, he stopped.

“Claire.”

I looked at him.

“You still don't know everything.”

Daniel frowned.

Sebastian smiled.

“Ask Graham why he was with Vanessa the night Owen was born.”

My hand slipped from Graham's.

The room went silent.

I turned toward him.

“What does he mean?”

Graham closed his eyes.

And I knew immediately.

There was one final secret.

May you like

One he had carried for five years.
