Chapter 11 - The Night Graham Finally Chose Us

Graham waited until Owen was asleep.
Then he told me.
“The night you gave birth, Vanessa called me.”
“I know.”
“She said she had evidence that Sebastian was planning something against you.”
I stared at him.
“You were with her because of Sebastian?”
“At first.”
“Then why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I didn't believe her.”
He looked ashamed.
“I thought Vanessa was trying to manipulate me into staying.”
“She was.”
“Yes.”
“But?”
“She showed me documents suggesting someone inside the family was watching the hospital.”
My stomach tightened.
“So when you told me to leave Chicago…”
“I thought I was protecting you.”
Anger surged through me.
“You divorced me while I was dying.”
“I know.”
“You told me you couldn't leave Vanessa.”
“I know.”
“You could have said three words, Graham. ‘You're in danger.’”
“I know.”
“Instead you made me believe you didn't care whether I lived.”
His eyes were wet.
I had never seen Graham cry.
Not once.
“I was cruel.”
“Yes.”
“I thought cruelty would make you leave faster.”
“It did.”
“I know.”
“And Vanessa?”
“I stayed long enough to get the documents.”
“Did you sleep with her?”
“No.”
I searched his face.
“No?”
“Never after I married you.”
Something inside me loosened.
Not enough to erase five years.
Enough to breathe.
“Why didn't you come to the hospital afterward?”
“By the time I understood the documents were real, Daniel told me Sebastian's people were watching. I believed publicly rejecting you would make you irrelevant.”
“You were wrong.”
“Yes.”
“And then?”
“I saw Owen.”
His voice broke.
“In that hospital.”
“I remember.”
“I wanted to take both of you home.”
“Then why didn't you?”
“Because I thought wanting you was exactly what would put you in danger.”
I sat silently.
Graham didn't ask forgiveness.
That mattered.
“I can't give you back those five years,” he said.
“No.”
“I can't undo what I said.”
“No.”
“But I can spend whatever time you'll allow me being better.”
I looked toward Owen's bedroom.
“This isn't about getting me back.”
“I know.”
“You're his father whether I forgive you or not.”
“I know.”
“And you don't disappear again.”
“I won't.”
“Don't promise things because you're emotional.”
He met my eyes.
“Then I'll prove it.”
And he did.
Not dramatically.
Not overnight.
He moved into a nearby apartment instead of assuming he belonged with us.
He took Owen to school.
Learned his pediatrician's name.
Learned which dinosaur was apparently superior to every other dinosaur.
Learned that Owen hated peas but would eat broccoli if you called it a tiny tree.
Months passed.
The investigations expanded.
Sebastian was indicted on financial crimes and conspiracy charges connected to decades of fraud.
Vanessa accepted responsibility for her part and cooperated.
She left Chicago afterward.
One evening the following spring, Owen fell asleep on Graham's chest.
I found them on the couch.
Almost exactly like the photograph that might have existed if our lives had been different.
Graham opened his eyes.
“Hey.”
“Hey.”
I covered Owen with a blanket.
Graham whispered, “Claire?”
“Yes?”
“I still love you.”
I froze.
He didn't move closer.
“I don't expect anything from that.”
“Then why say it?”
“Because five years ago I lied about almost everything that mattered.”
His eyes stayed on mine.
“I don't want to lie anymore.”
I sat beside him.
“You hurt me.”
“I know.”
“I hated you.”
“I know.”
“Sometimes I still do.”
“That seems fair.”
A laugh escaped me.
Then Owen shifted between us.
His tiny hand landed across both of ours.
I looked at Graham.
For the first time, neither of us pulled away.
Then Graham said something unexpected.
“Daniel found August's original letter.”
My heart stopped.
“The one stolen from the hospital?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Among Sebastian's records.”
Graham handed me an old cream envelope.
My name was written across the front.
I opened it.
Inside was one page.
And at the bottom, beneath August's signature, was a sentence that changed everything we thought we knew about Owen's inheritance.

The final decision belongs entirely to Claire.
