Chapter 3 - The Woman Graham Chose Over His Son

Vanessa called again that night.
I didn't answer.
By morning, I had made my decision.
I wasn't waiting for Graham's flight arrangements.
My father still had friends outside the Ashford network, including an attorney in Boston named Rebecca Sloan. Rebecca arranged temporary housing under my maiden name and transportation once the doctors cleared me.
I would leave Chicago.
But not because Graham ordered me to.
I would leave because Owen deserved a childhood that wasn't negotiated in boardrooms.
Three days later, Graham finally appeared.
I was packing Owen's clothes when the door opened.
No flowers.
No apology.
Graham stood there in a charcoal suit.
He looked exactly as he always did.
Controlled.
Beautiful.
Unreachable.
Then he saw the bassinet.
Everything changed for half a second.
His eyes stopped.
Owen was awake.
Graham stared at him.
I watched something move across my husband's face.
Shock.
Recognition.
Fear.
Then it disappeared.
“You're still here.”
The cruelty of those words almost impressed me.
“I had a medical emergency, Graham. Airlines tend to dislike passengers collapsing halfway across the Atlantic.”
His jaw tightened.
“I didn't mean—”
“Yes, you did.”
He looked toward Owen again.
“What's his name?”
I froze.
“Owen.”
“Owen Ashford.”
“Mercer.”
His eyes snapped toward mine.
“What?”
“You surrendered custody.”
“He's still my son.”
“Interesting time to remember that.”
Graham stepped closer.
Owen made a tiny sound.
Graham stopped.
He seemed genuinely afraid to approach.
“Hold him.”
“No.”
I stared at him.
“You haven't even touched your child.”
“I said no.”
“Why?”
His face hardened.
“Because this isn't necessary.”
I understood then.
It wasn't indifference.
Graham was afraid.
Not of Owen.
Of loving him.
I lifted my son.
Graham stepped backward.
That hurt more than it should have.
Then Vanessa appeared in the doorway.
Perfect blond hair.
Cream coat.
Diamond earrings.
She saw Owen in my arms.
Her smile vanished.
“Graham.”
He turned sharply.
“What are you doing here?”
“I came with you.”
“I told you to wait downstairs.”
Vanessa ignored him.
Her gaze remained fixed on my baby.
“He looks like you.”
Nobody answered.
She moved closer.
I instinctively shifted Owen away.
Vanessa noticed.
“So protective.”
“You called me.”
Graham turned.
“What?”
Vanessa's expression changed.
“I don't know what she's talking about.”
“You called yesterday,” I said. “You told me I should have listened to my husband.”
“Claire—”
“I recognized your voice.”
Graham looked at Vanessa.
“Did you?”
“No.”
She laughed softly.
“She nearly died. She's exhausted.”
Graham's face became unreadable.
Then Daniel entered behind them.
“Graham.”
“What?”
Daniel held out his phone.
“You need to see this.”
Graham read something.
His face drained of color.
“What is this?”
“August's final trust amendment.”
Vanessa moved closer.
“What amendment?”
Graham ignored her.
His eyes slowly lifted toward Owen.
For the first time, fear appeared openly on his face.
“Who else knows?”
“Sebastian.”
“Anyone else?”
“We're determining that.”
Vanessa stared between them.
“What does the baby have to do with the trust?”
Nobody answered.
She asked again.
Louder.
“Graham?”
He looked at her.
And something passed between them that I couldn't understand.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“You told me August never signed it.”
The room went silent.
Graham stared at her.
“I never told you about the amendment.”
Vanessa realized her mistake too late.
And in that instant, Graham finally understood something I had begun to suspect.
May you like
Vanessa knew far more about Owen's inheritance than she was supposed to.
