Chapter 7 - The Truth Vanessa Buried for Three Years

The evidence was hidden in the last place I expected.

A children's book.

Five years earlier, before leaving Chicago, one of August's former housekeepers had given me a box of belongings from the Ashford mansion.

Most were mine.

A few weren't.

Among them was a leather-bound collection of children's stories August had once kept in his library.

Owen loved it.

I had read it to him dozens of times.

That night, Graham noticed something inside the spine.

A narrow seam.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a memory card.

We stared at each other.

“August,” Graham said.

We played the files on my laptop.

Financial records.

Emails.

Recorded conversations.

Evidence showing that someone inside the Ashford organization had been stealing from the legitimate companies for years.

Then one name appeared repeatedly.

Vanessa Cole.

But Vanessa wasn't the architect.

She had been receiving instructions from someone identified only as S.A.

Graham's face hardened.

“Sebastian.”

I looked at him.

“Your great-uncle?”

“He controlled several subsidiaries.”

We kept reading.

The scheme had begun before our marriage.

Vanessa had been used to influence Graham.

August discovered it.

That was why he had opposed their relationship.

Not because Vanessa wasn't socially acceptable.

Because August believed she was feeding Sebastian information.

Then we found the recording.

Vanessa's voice.

“I don't care about Claire.”

Sebastian answered.

“You should. The Mercer marriage protects Graham.”

“Then break it.”

“How?”

“Make him believe she trapped him.”

My stomach twisted.

The pregnancy.

The accusations.

Years of resentment.

Vanessa had been feeding Graham suspicions long before Owen existed.

Then came another recording.

Recorded weeks before my wedding.

Vanessa said:

“If Graham marries Claire, I'll make sure he hates her for it.”

I looked at Graham.

He was staring at the screen.

Everything he believed about our marriage was collapsing.

“She lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“I believed her.”

“Yes.”

His eyes closed.

“I punished you for something you never did.”

I said nothing.

There was nothing to say.

Then we reached the final file.

August himself appeared on video.

He looked ill.

Older than I remembered.

“If you're watching this, Claire, then I failed to clean up my own family before my death.”

Graham leaned closer.

August continued.

“Sebastian has spent years positioning himself to control Graham. Vanessa was part of that effort.”

Then August said something neither of us expected.

“Graham loves you.”

Graham froze.

I almost stopped the video.

August smiled sadly.

“My grandson will deny it because he confuses love with weakness. He will probably hurt you before he understands that.”

My throat tightened.

“Unfortunately, Claire, I fear he may understand too late.”

Graham looked away.

August's expression became serious.

“The trust was not designed to make Owen powerful. It was designed to make him independent of Sebastian.”

The screen flickered.

Then August delivered his final warning.

“If Sebastian ever discovers this recording exists, he will come for it.”

A sound came from outside.

Glass breaking.

Graham stood instantly.

The lights went out.

Owen screamed upstairs.

I ran.

But Graham grabbed my arm.

“Stay behind me.”

Another crash.

Then my phone illuminated.

A message from an unknown number.

GIVE US AUGUST'S FILES, AND YOUR SON STAYS OUT OF THIS.

Graham read it over my shoulder.

For the first time in five years, the cold mask disappeared completely.

Nobody had threatened his empire.

They had threatened his child.

May you like

And Graham Ashford was finally about to discover which mattered more.
