Chapter 11 - Daniel’s Second Phone

Eleanor didn't deny anything.

That surprised everyone.

She sat across from me and folded her hands.

“My father died believing your mother destroyed him.”

“Your father stole money.”

“He said he was framed.”

“The records disagree.”

“Records created by people with power.”

Maya interrupted.

“Be careful, Eleanor.”

Eleanor smiled.

“I'm not confessing.”

“No,” I said. “You're explaining.”

She looked at me.

“Yes.”

Then she told us about Daniel.

Three years earlier, she discovered he had secretly accumulated gambling and investment losses.

Almost $700,000.

Instead of exposing him, she offered him a solution.

Blackridge.

At first Daniel moved small amounts.

Then larger ones.

Soon he realized my company could become more profitable to steal from than to protect.

Their partnership changed.

Eleanor wanted revenge.

Daniel wanted ownership.

Claire became his lover.

Michael became his technical tool.

And I became the obstacle.

“You wanted me declared incompetent,” I said.

Daniel remained silent.

Eleanor answered for him.

“He did.”

“And you?”

“I wanted you removed.”

“Difference?”

“I didn't care how.”

The room went cold.

Daniel finally spoke.

“This is absurd.”

Eleanor laughed.

“Oh, Daniel.”

She reached into her handbag.

Daniel stood.

Maya stepped forward.

Eleanor placed a phone on the table.

Not hers.

Daniel's second phone.

His face changed.

Claire whispered, “You said you destroyed it.”

Daniel stared at Eleanor.

She smiled.

“I lie too.”

Investigators later found hundreds of messages on that phone.

Daniel discussing my medical records.

Daniel arranging payments.

Daniel instructing Claire what to say after the attack.

Daniel asking Eleanor whether “a second accident” would solve the problem.

That phrase ended any remaining doubt about the danger I had been in.

But the phone contained something else.

A scheduled message.

Set to send automatically if Daniel failed to cancel it by midnight.

Recipient:

Me.

Attachment:

A video.

Maya opened it.

Daniel appeared on screen.

He was sitting in our study.

“If you're watching this, Rachel, things have gone wrong.”

Everyone stared.

Video Daniel continued.

“You'll want to believe I never loved you.”

My throat tightened.

“That isn't true.”

Claire looked away.

“I loved you. Then I started resenting you. Every room we entered, people asked what you thought. What you had built. What award you'd won. I became Rachel Hawthorne's husband.”

I felt no pity.

Only sadness.

“You never made me feel small,” he continued. “I made myself small by measuring my life against yours.”

For the first time, Daniel in the boardroom looked ashamed.

The video continued.

“None of that excuses what I did.”

That was the only honest sentence he had given me.

Then came the twist.

“If Eleanor tells you she controlled everything, don't believe her. If Claire tells you she was only a victim, don't believe her. And if Michael tells you he joined us only to protect you…”

Daniel on screen paused.

“Ask him about account 7714.”

Michael went pale.

I turned toward him.

“What is account 7714?”

He didn't answer.

“Michael.”

He closed his eyes.

“It was mine.”

The room erupted.

I raised my hand.

Everyone stopped.

“How much?”

“Two hundred eighty thousand.”

“Stolen from me?”

“No.”

“From the company?”

He looked at the floor.

“Yes.”

My brother had told me Daniel used him.

He had neglected to mention he had also stolen from me.

Michael whispered, “I paid it back.”

“That doesn't erase it.”

“I know.”

For once, there was no easy category.

No innocent side of the table.

No clean group of heroes facing villains.

Everyone had choices.

Some had made terrible ones.

The difference was what they did when given another chance.

I looked at Michael.

“You will tell investigators everything.”

He nodded.

“Everything.”

“Yes.”

“And accept whatever happens.”

His eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Then I looked at Daniel.

He had spent months trying to make me look incapable.

Instead, he had assembled the evidence that exposed everyone around him.

Including himself.

But the scheduled video had one final sentence.

“If you want to know where the missing money is, Rachel, look beneath the place where we promised forever.”

Our wedding venue.

May you like

The chapel where Daniel and I had exchanged vows eight years earlier.

And beneath that chapel, investigators found something none of us expected.
