Chapter 13 - My Best Friend Made One Fatal Mistake

Claire's biggest mistake wasn't hitting me.
It wasn't kissing Daniel.
It wasn't helping unlock my phone.
Her fatal mistake was believing Daniel loved her.
During her cooperation interviews, investigators showed Claire messages from Daniel's second phone.
He had been planning to frame her too.
Once my accounts were emptied, Daniel intended to make Claire responsible for the assault, forged documents, and fraudulent transfers.
Eleanor would disappear behind shell corporations.
Daniel would present himself as the devastated husband.
Claire would take the fall.
When she learned that, she stopped protecting him.
She provided everything.
Hotel receipts.
Passwords.
Hidden emails.
A storage locker.
Inside investigators found the original red dress she wore the night she attacked me.
And my blood was still on it.
Daniel's defense began collapsing.
Claire called me once from county detention.
I almost refused.
Instead, I answered.
“Rachel.”
I said nothing.
“I don't expect forgiveness.”
“Good.”
She inhaled.
“I loved you.”
“People keep telling me that after betraying me.”
“I know.”
“Why Daniel?”
“He made me feel chosen.”
“And I didn't?”
“You made me feel loved.”
Her voice broke.
“But beside you, I always felt ordinary.”
There it was.
Not my crime.
Her wound.
I said quietly, “I never asked you to compete with me.”
“I know.”
“Then why did you?”
“Because I didn't know how not to.”
For seventeen years, Claire had compared herself to me while I had simply loved her.
That was perhaps the saddest truth of all.
Before ending the call, she said, “Your trophy saved you.”
“No.”
I looked at the scar above my ear in the mirror.
“The truth saved me.”
Then I hung up.
The next morning, Hawthorne Risk Advisory lost its largest client.
By afternoon, two more suspended contracts.
My personal victory had not saved my company.
The scandal was destroying everything I had built.

And for the first time, I faced an enemy no recording could defeat.
Public distrust.
