Chapter 15 - Daniel Learned Who Really Owned the Company

Daniel had always assumed marriage made him entitled to half of everything.

He was wrong.

Hawthorne Risk Advisory had been created before our marriage.

More importantly, my mother had placed my founding shares into a protected trust.

Daniel had no ownership claim.

The realization reached him during a settlement conference.

His attorney whispered something.

Daniel's face changed.

He looked across the room at me.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“All this time?”

“Yes.”

He laughed bitterly.

“So none of it would have worked.”

“The theft?”

“The company.”

“No.”

Years of planning.

Manipulation.

Forgery.

Betrayal.

And the prize he wanted most had never been available to him.

Daniel leaned back.

For once, he had nothing to say.

I didn't enjoy his humiliation.

That surprised me.

I had imagined revenge.

Instead, I felt emptiness.

The man sitting across from me wasn't the husband I missed.

That husband had never existed in the form I believed.

My attorney slid divorce documents forward.

Daniel signed.

Eight years ended with ink.

As I stood to leave, he said, “Rachel.”

I turned.

“I really did love you.”

I looked at him for several seconds.

“Maybe.”

He flinched.

“But love without respect becomes possession.”

Then I walked out.

Outside, rain covered the courthouse steps.

Maya held an umbrella.

I stepped past it.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

“Getting wet.”

She laughed.

So did I.

May you like

For the first time in months, nobody was deciding what was best for me.

Even something as small as standing in the rain belonged to me again.
