Chapter 14 - The Board Meeting They Thought Would Destroy Me

The board asked me to resign.

Not permanently.

“Temporarily.”

That word again.

Temporary had become everyone's favorite way of taking something from me.

I entered the meeting with no attorney.

No investigators.

No secret recorder.

Just me.

One board member said, “Rachel, perception matters.”

“I know.”

“Clients are frightened.”

“I know.”

“You are connected personally to nearly everyone involved.”

“I know.”

He sighed.

“Then you understand.”

“Yes.”

Everyone relaxed.

They thought I was surrendering.

I continued.

“I understand why you believe removing me will protect the company.”

Silence.

“But this company was founded to do one thing: identify financial misconduct even when the truth is uncomfortable.”

I placed my mother's ledger on the table.

“If you remove me because criminals targeted me, you're telling every employee that integrity is acceptable only when it is convenient.”

Nobody spoke.

“I won't force this board to keep me.”

I stood.

“But I won't resign to make dishonest people more comfortable.”

Then I left.

Three hours later, the vote came.

Six to three.

I remained CEO.

Not because everyone trusted me.

Because enough people understood what surrender would mean.

That evening, employees gathered in the lobby.

No speeches had been planned.

No cameras invited.

Owen stood near the entrance.

Maya beside him.

Michael wasn't there.

He was facing his own legal consequences.

Claire wasn't there.

Daniel certainly wasn't.

But nearly eighty employees were.

One young analyst approached me.

“My dad saw the news.”

I braced myself.

She smiled.

“He said he wants us managing his retirement account.”

I laughed for the first time in weeks.

Then someone started applauding.

Others joined.

I didn't feel victorious.

I felt exhausted.

May you like

But sometimes survival doesn't look like triumph.

Sometimes it looks like standing in the same building people tried to take from you and realizing you're still there.
