Chapter 14 - A Mother’s Evidence

Mian refused to hide.

So did Atseli.

“You have babies,” Silas argued.

“That is why,” Mian replied.

Those four words ended the argument.

She showed Marshal Cole something nobody else had seen.

Inside Luli's blanket was a stitched pocket.

Mian opened it.

A letter.

It had been written by Voss himself to a partner in California.

The letter discussed “transferring labor assets” and falsifying debts.

It named officials.

Dates.

Amounts.

Voss's lawyer could challenge copied ledgers.

He could not easily explain his client's signature.

Mian had hidden the letter inside her baby's blanket during the escape.

Five days starving.

Five nights freezing.

She had protected evidence while believing she might die.

Silas stared at her.

“You carried this the whole way?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Mian looked at Luli.

“So she not grow in same world.”

Silas had no answer.

That night, Harlan returned.

Not to kill anyone.

To surrender.

He walked onto the ranch unarmed.

“Voss will have me killed.”

Silas nearly shut the door.

Boon stopped him.

Harlan offered testimony in exchange for protection.

He described bribes.

Arson.

Abductions.

The attack on Boon.

Everything.

The case was complete.

But Rattler Creek had not yet faced its own responsibility.

That would happen at the church.

May you like

And for many people, that reckoning would be harder than putting Caleb Voss in prison.
