Chapter 18 - The House That Became a Home

Spring became summer.

Ward Ranch expanded.

Former workers from Voss's camp were offered paid employment.

Real wages.

Written agreements explained aloud before anyone signed.

Silas insisted on it.

The ranch became profitable again.

Mian planted vegetables beside the cabin.

Atseli managed horses better than Silas did, though he refused to admit it publicly.

Rattler Creek's community kitchen grew into a permanent shelter.

Above its door hung a simple wooden sign:

NO ONE HUNGRY IS A STRANGER.

Silas pretended the phrase was sentimental.

Everyone knew he loved it.

One afternoon, Mrs. Ardell arrived carrying pie.

Silas looked suspicious.

“What do you want?”

“Nothing.”

“Then what's wrong with the pie?”

She slapped his arm.

“Take it.”

He did.

She watched Mian playing with Luli.

“I was wrong.”

Silas looked at her.

Mrs. Ardell swallowed.

“That winter.”

Silas waited.

“I was afraid.”

“Yes.”

“I made fear sound respectable.”

Silas considered that.

“Most people do.”

“Do you forgive me?”

Silas looked toward Mian.

“That isn't mine to give.”

Mrs. Ardell nodded.

She approached Mian herself.

That mattered more.

By autumn, the ranch house had been expanded.

Two additional rooms.

A larger kitchen.

A porch wide enough for everyone.

On the first cold night of the season, snow began falling.

Silas sat at the table.

Mian served rice.

Atseli brought bread.

Kai chased Luli around the chairs.

“Walk,” Silas said.

They ignored him.

“Children.”

More laughter.

Silas shook his head.

Then came a knock.

Three taps.

Everyone stopped.

Silas stared at the door.

For an instant, he was back one year earlier.

Alone.

Coffee.

Cold bread.

A dead house.

Three knocks.

Silas stood.

He opened the door.

A family waited outside.

A father.

A mother.

Three children.

Their wagon had broken several miles away.

The youngest child shivered.

The father removed his hat.

“Sorry to trouble you, sir.”

Silas stepped aside immediately.

“Get inside.”

Mian smiled.

Atseli put another log on the fire.

No hesitation.

No suspicion.

No questions about where they came from.

First warmth.

Then food.

Everything else could wait.

Silas closed the door against the snow.

The house filled with voices.

And he realized Ward Ranch had become the thing he once believed it could never be again.

A home.

But the following morning brought one final surprise.

A wagon from town arrived carrying a large wooden plaque.

Behind it came nearly every resident of Rattler Creek.

Silas stepped onto the porch.

“What now?”

Thomas Bell pointed toward the road.

“Come see.”

At the entrance to Ward Ranch stood a new sign.

Silas read it.

Then looked at the crowd.

May you like

For once, he had no words.
