Chapter 16 - The Winter Reckoning

The federal trial took six weeks.
Voss was convicted on multiple charges involving fraud, kidnapping, assault, unlawful confinement and conspiracy.
Harlan received a reduced sentence for cooperation.
Reverend Pike resigned.
He did not leave town.
Instead, he spent the winter working without pay for families Voss had harmed.
Some forgave him.
Some did not.
He accepted both.
Rattler Creek changed slowly.
That mattered.
Sudden transformations belonged to stories.
Real people changed awkwardly.
Mrs. Ardell still gossiped.
Thomas Bell still spoke five words at a time.
People still argued.
But doors opened more often.
A community kitchen began operating beside the church.
No questions asked.
No debts recorded.
Mian helped run it.
Atseli organized supplies for isolated families.
Silas rebuilt his barn.
Again.
One afternoon, Marshal Cole arrived.
He carried documents returning stolen land to several families.
Among the claims was acreage belonging to Atseli's relatives.
She stared at the paper.
“You can go home,” Silas said.
Atseli looked toward Ward Ranch.
Then at Kai playing near the porch.
“I am home.”
Silas did not know what to say.
Mian emerged carrying Luli.
She had received an offer of work in San Francisco from relatives of Jian.
“You should go,” Silas told her.
Mian smiled.
“You want me leave?”
“No.”
“Then why say?”
“Because I don't want you staying because you think you owe me.”
Mian's smile faded.
“We owe you nothing?”
“Nothing.”
She nodded.
“Good.”
Then she handed the letter back.
“I stay because I choose.”
Silas looked toward the cabin.
For three years, nobody had chosen Ward Ranch.
Now people were choosing it.
Something inside him finally began to heal.
But one thing remained unfinished.
Anna's room.
He had kept it locked since she died.
That night, Silas stood before the door.

Then slowly turned the key.
