Chapter 15 - The Trial at the Church

The courthouse could not hold everyone.

So the preliminary hearing moved to the church.

Every bench filled.

Silas sat beside Mian and Atseli.

Voss entered in chains.

The room fell silent.

Testimony lasted hours.

Then Mian stood.

Her voice shook at first.

She described arriving in America.

Losing Jian.

Signing papers she could not read.

Giving birth while trapped by debt.

Escaping.

Five days without food.

Three doors closing.

Then Silas Ward opening his.

She did not speak dramatically.

That made her testimony stronger.

Atseli followed.

She spoke about fear.

About being treated as though being Apache made her suffering less important.

Then she looked around the church.

“Cruel men need good people to look away.”

Nobody moved.

Mrs. Ardell began crying.

Reverend Pike lowered his head.

Silas testified last.

The lawyer asked why he sheltered them.

Silas thought for a moment.

“Because they knocked.”

The lawyer frowned.

“That's your reason?”

“Yes.”

“You risked your property, reputation and life because strangers knocked?”

Silas looked toward Mian.

Toward Atseli.

Toward the babies.

“They weren't strangers after I opened the door.”

No one spoke.

Voss was ordered held for federal trial.

As officers took him away, he looked at Silas.

“You think they love you now?”

Silas said nothing.

“They'll forget.”

Perhaps they would.

People often did.

But Silas had learned that goodness did not require applause to matter.

That evening, the church doors opened.

Snow had begun falling.

For the first time, the entire town walked toward Ward Ranch together.

Not to threaten him.

May you like

To rebuild what they had helped destroy.
