Chapter 16 - Back Beneath the Chandeliers

One year after the night everything changed, Claire entered the ballroom again.

This time she was not carrying a tray.

She wore a deep midnight-blue gown.

Drew walked beside her.

Lucy held both their hands.

Vanessa greeted them near the entrance.

She had built a life separate from her father’s business and looked happier than Claire remembered.

Evelyn arrived later.

Her relationship with Drew remained complicated.

Forgiveness had not erased consequences.

But she had spent the year trying to repair what she could.

Marcus came too.

He refused formal clothes until Lucy demanded he wear a tie.

The orchestra began.

Drew looked at Claire.

“Dance?”

“You’re terrible.”

“I’ve improved.”

“You stepped on my foot at our wedding.”

“That was five years ago.”

“Six.”

He smiled.

She took his hand.

They danced beneath the chandelier where Drew had once publicly revealed their marriage.

Claire expected ghosts.

Instead, she felt peace.

Then Drew whispered, “I have something to ask you.”

Claire stiffened.

He felt it immediately.

“No surprises.”

That made her laugh.

He led her onto the balcony.

No crowd followed.

No cameras.

Just them.

Drew took out a small box.

Inside was not a new ring.

It was her original courthouse ring, restored but unchanged.

“I don’t want another wedding unless you do.”

Claire stared at him.

“I want one.”

Drew smiled.

“Big?”

“No.”

“Ballroom?”

“Absolutely not.”

They laughed.

Claire touched his face.

“I want the wedding we would have had if nobody had been trying to control our lives.”

Drew kissed her.

“Then that’s what we’ll have.”

Behind the balcony doors, Lucy had been listening.

She burst through them.

“Can I wear a fancy dress?”

Claire laughed.

“Yes.”

“Can I have cake?”

“Yes.”

“Can I be in charge?”

Drew said, “No.”

Lucy frowned.

May you like

Claire whispered, “We’ll negotiate.”

And for the first time, planning a future felt more exciting than uncovering the past.
