Chapter 3 - The Ring That Shouldn't Exist

Claire recognized it immediately.
A narrow silver band.
A tiny scratch near the edge from the night Drew had tried to open a bottle with it.
Her wedding ring.
The ring she had left on their kitchen table five years ago.
Drew’s face changed.
“Where did you get that?”
Richard Carlisle looked down at the ring.
“Someone sent it to me this morning.”
Vanessa stepped toward her father.
“Why?”
Richard hesitated.
The room had become unbearably quiet.
“With instructions.”
Drew’s eyes hardened.
“What instructions?”
Richard reached inside his jacket and removed a folded card.
“Make sure Claire Bennett attends tonight.”
Claire felt the floor disappear beneath her.
Her catering company had received a last-minute request that morning.
One additional server.
Her supervisor had selected Claire.
She had thought it was bad luck.
It wasn’t.
Someone had brought her here deliberately.
Drew moved closer to her.
“Who sent it?”
“No name,” Richard said.
“Then how did they know she worked for the caterer?”
“I don’t know.”
Claire looked across the ballroom.
Hundreds of faces.
Guests.
Employees.
Security.
Someone in this room might have been watching her for years.
Evelyn reached for the card.
Richard handed it to her.
On the back were six typed words.
THE MERCER FAMILY DESERVES THE TRUTH.
Evelyn went pale.
Drew noticed.
“What truth?”
Evelyn said nothing.
“Aunt Evelyn.”
Nothing.
Claire suddenly understood.
“There’s another secret.”
Evelyn looked at her.
Claire whispered, “Isn’t there?”
Before Evelyn could answer, the ballroom lights went out.
Someone screamed.
Drew grabbed Claire.
“Stay with me.”
Darkness swallowed the room.
Then a giant screen above the orchestra flickered to life.
A photograph appeared.
Claire and Drew on their courthouse wedding day.
Another photograph.
Their apartment.
Another.
Claire entering Evelyn’s car.
Then the final image appeared.
A hospital record.
Drew read the name.
His grip on Claire loosened.
PATIENT: CLAIRE MERCER.
Underneath it:
PREGNANCY CONFIRMED.
Drew turned slowly toward her.
Claire closed her eyes.
That had been the second secret.
The one even Evelyn didn’t know.
“You were pregnant?”
Claire could barely speak.
“Yes.”
Drew looked shattered.
“What happened to our baby?”
Claire opened her eyes.
And somewhere behind the ballroom doors, a child’s voice called:
“Mom?”
Claire’s heart stopped.
Because she knew that voice.

And Drew did not.
Not yet.
