Chapter 18 - What Money Could Never Buy

Three years later, Mercer Holdings looked different.

Smaller.

Cleaner.

Less powerful.

Drew considered that progress.

He sold several divisions and used part of his personal fortune to establish employee ownership programs.

Marcus ran a nonprofit investigating corporate financial abuse.

Vanessa founded her own design company.

Richard cooperated fully with prosecutors and accepted responsibility for the role he had played.

Evelyn never asked Claire for forgiveness again.

She understood that asking repeatedly could become another demand.

Instead, she showed up.

Birthdays.

School performances.

Sunday dinners.

Slowly, trust returned.

Not completely.

But honestly.

Charles remained in prison.

He wrote Drew letters.

Drew rarely answered.

Then one day Lucy asked about him.

“Is he my grandpa?”

“Yes.”

“Is he bad?”

Drew thought carefully.

“He did bad things.”

“Do you hate him?”

Drew looked at Claire.

“No.”

That surprised Claire.

“I stopped giving him that much space in my life.”

Later Claire asked whether he meant it.

“I think so.”

They sat on the porch of their home.

Not a mansion.

Drew could have bought one.

Claire didn’t want one.

Their house had a backyard, crooked kitchen cabinets and a porch swing that squeaked.

Perfect.

Lucy ran across the lawn.

Claire leaned against Drew.

“You gave up billions for this.”

Drew looked around.

“No.”

He kissed her forehead.

“I stopped confusing billions with this.”

Then Lucy shouted from the yard.

“Mom! Dad!”

They looked up.

She held something in her hands.

A tiny silver object.

Claire recognized it.

The old champagne-glass charm from the hotel gala, given to her by a coworker after the scandal.

Lucy asked, “Why did you keep this?”

Claire looked at Drew.

“Because sometimes the worst night of your life can also be the night your life comes back.”

Lucy frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

May you like

Drew smiled.

“It will someday.”
