Chapter 4 - The Little Girl Behind the Door

Claire ran.
She forgot the guests.
Forgot Vanessa.
Forgot Evelyn.
Forgot the secret photographs glowing across the ballroom screen.
“Mom!”
Claire reached the corridor.
A little girl stood beside a frightened catering manager.
Lucy.
Five years old.
Dark hair.
Brown eyes.
Drew’s eyes.
Claire dropped to her knees.
“What are you doing here?”
Lucy threw herself into Claire’s arms.
“Mrs. Alvarez got sick.”
Claire’s neighbor had been babysitting.
An ambulance had taken her to the hospital, and with Claire unreachable during the gala, Mrs. Alvarez’s teenage grandson had brought Lucy to the hotel.
Claire held her tightly.
Then she heard footsteps.
Drew.
He stopped at the ballroom entrance.
His face emptied.
Lucy looked over Claire’s shoulder.
“Who’s that?”
Claire couldn’t breathe.
Drew stared at the child.
Then at Claire.
“How old is she?”
Claire stood slowly.
“Drew—”
“How old?”
“Five.”
He closed his eyes.
The answer hurt him physically.
When he opened them again, tears stood in his eyes.
“She’s mine.”
It wasn’t a question.
Claire nodded.
“Yes.”
Drew leaned against the wall.
For five years he had believed his wife abandoned him.
Now he was learning she had left carrying his child.
Lucy tugged Claire’s hand.
“Mom?”
Claire knelt.
“This is Drew.”
Lucy studied him.
Drew lowered himself carefully.
“Hi.”
“Hi.”
Neither knew what came next.
Then Lucy noticed the tears in his eyes.
“Are you sad?”
Drew laughed once, brokenly.
“A little.”
Lucy considered this.
Then she reached into the pocket of her small coat and offered him a tissue.
Drew accepted it.
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
Claire turned away because she couldn’t watch without falling apart.
But the moment lasted only seconds.
Evelyn appeared.
Behind her stood Richard and Vanessa.
Vanessa stared at Lucy.
Then at Drew.
Understanding transformed her anger into something quieter.
“You have a daughter.”
Drew nodded without looking away from Lucy.
Richard whispered something under his breath.
Evelyn looked devastated.
“I didn’t know.”
Claire believed her.
“I found out after I disappeared.”
“Why didn’t you contact me?”
“Because I didn’t know who I could trust.”
Drew stood.
“You could have trusted me.”
Claire looked at him.
“I trusted you enough to leave.”
That silenced him.
Because now he understood.
Claire had not left because she doubted him.
She had left because she knew him.
Drew would have fought whoever threatened them.
And Claire had been terrified he would die doing it.
Security personnel entered the corridor.
“Mr. Mercer, we have a problem.”
Drew turned.
“What?”
“The ballroom security system was accessed remotely.”
“Trace it.”
“We did.”
The guard hesitated.
“The authorization came from inside Mercer Holdings.”
Evelyn looked at Drew.
“How high?”
The guard handed him a tablet.
Drew read the credentials.
Then looked toward Richard Carlisle.
Richard frowned.
“What?”
Drew’s voice was cold.
“The authorization belongs to you.”
Vanessa stared at her father.
Richard went white.

And Claire realized the danger had not returned tonight.
It had never left.
