Chapter 14 - The Call
Three weeks after Elena’s release, her phone rang at 2:13 a.m.
Unknown number.
She answered.
“Elena.”
She recognized Bell immediately.
Her body went cold.
“You stole five years from me.”
“I saved your daughter.”
Elena sat upright.
“What?”
“You think Rebecca was the only person I threatened?”
Bell told her Daniel’s records implicated powerful people beyond him.
He claimed everything he had done was survival.
Elena refused to give him what he wanted.
Sympathy.
“You framed an innocent mother.”
Silence.
Then Bell said:
“I need Daniel’s key.”
Elena looked toward Chloe’s bedroom.
Police had the key.
Bell apparently did not know that.
“Why?”
“There’s another compartment.”
The call ended.
