Chapter 6 - Linda Mercer Talks

Linda Mercer lasted nine hours.

At first she denied everything.

Then investigators showed her the handwriting.

Then the recording.

Then the financial transfers.

Finally, they told her Marcus Bell had blamed her.

That was a lie.

Bell had said nothing.

But Linda believed it.

And fear accomplished what five years of silence had protected.

“He promised nobody would die,” she whispered.

Ortiz leaned forward.

“Daniel died.”

“I meant Elena.”

“You helped put her on death row.”

“I thought the appeals would fix it.”

Ortiz stared at her.

“You thought someone else would correct the lie you told under oath?”

Linda began crying.

Then the entire story emerged.

Daniel discovered Bell’s financial scheme.

Bell panicked.

Linda confronted Daniel.

The confrontation became violent.

But Linda insisted she had not killed him.

“Who did?”

She looked at Ortiz.

“Bell.”
