Chapter 8 - Rebecca’s Secret

When Elena learned Rebecca’s name was in the records, she refused to believe it.
Rebecca had raised Chloe.
Rebecca had paid lawyers.
Rebecca had attended appeals.
But Rebecca had also told Chloe that her memory of Linda was wrong.
Investigators brought her in.
Rebecca cried before the first question.
“I didn't know they would kill Daniel.”
Elena watched the recorded interview later.
Each sentence felt like another betrayal.
Rebecca admitted Daniel had called her first.
He wanted Elena to come because he trusted her.
Rebecca mentioned the call to Bell, whom she knew socially through charity work.
She had no idea Bell was involved in the fraud.
After Elena’s arrest, Bell frightened Rebecca into silence.
He told her that if she challenged the case, Chloe could be taken away.
Rebecca believed him.
For five years, she chose Chloe’s security over Elena’s truth.
When Elena finally saw her sister, neither woman spoke.
Then Elena asked:
“Why?”
Rebecca whispered:
“I was afraid.”
“So was I.”
That was all Elena could say.
