Chapter 9 - The Hearing

The courtroom was packed.

Elena entered wearing restraints.

Chloe sat behind the defense table.

Cameras waited outside.

Caldwell did something prosecutors rarely did.

He stood before the judge and admitted the state had been wrong.

“The integrity of justice requires more than defending a conviction,” he said. “It requires correcting one when evidence demonstrates it cannot stand.”

Daniel’s recording was played.

Linda’s confession was introduced.

Financial records were authenticated.

Then Chloe testified.

She was small in the enormous witness chair.

The defense attorney asked one final question.

“Chloe, why did you wait until your mother’s final day?”

Chloe looked at Elena.

“Because Mrs. Mercer asked if I remembered.”

“And?”

“I realized grown-ups were scared of what I remembered.”

The courtroom became silent.

The judge removed his glasses.

And for the first time, Elena allowed herself to imagine walking outside.
