Chapter 10 - The Morning Josephine Took the Wagon

Josephine left before dawn.
Alone.
She took the chuck wagon.
And the ledger.
Her note contained only three sentences.
Walker, you have men and cattle depending on you. Sam and I were never supposed to become your responsibility. Please don't follow me.
Walker read it twice.
Then said a word Ellis had never heard spoken in church.
Dusty looked toward the missing wagon tracks.
“What now?”
Walker mounted.
“What do you think?”
Dusty smiled.
“We follow the cook.”
“No.”
Walker pointed toward the herd.
“You take them north.”
“And you?”
Walker looked toward Josephine's tracks.
“I bring her home.”
It was the first time he had used that word.
May you like
Home.
