Chapter 7 - The Man Who Came Looking for Josephine

Silas returned with the law.
Or something that looked like it.
Two deputies accompanied him.
They carried a warrant accusing Josephine of theft.
Walker read it.
“Forgery.”
The older deputy frowned.
“That's for a judge to decide.”
Josephine stepped forward.
“I'll go.”
Walker turned.
“No.”
“If I run, Silas wins.”
“If you go with them, he gets the ledger.”
“I won't bring it.”
Silas smiled.
Walker understood.
The warrant wasn't about Josephine.
It was about separating her from the crew.
Walker handed the paper back.
“She reaches Caldwell first.”
The deputy touched his revolver.
“So you're interfering with lawful arrest?”
Walker’s men slowly stood.
Twelve cowboys.
Twelve armed men.
Dusty smiled.
“Seems crowded for an arrest.”
The deputies reconsidered.
Silas didn't.
“This isn't over.”
Walker nodded.
“Finally something we agree on.”
They left.
But Josephine knew the next confrontation would not end with words.
May you like
And she was right.
