Chapter 14 - The Truth About Amos Vance

Marshal Nathaniel Crowe met them twenty miles outside Caldwell.

He had received a message from Dusty.

When Josephine showed him the ledger, his face darkened.

“I've been looking for this for three years.”

He explained the rest.

Amos Vance had been helping him.

So had Walker's father.

Silas’s operation stretched across three territories.

Stolen cattle.

Forged deeds.

Bribed officials.

Amos had discovered too much.

The Washita stampede might not have been an accident.

Josephine went cold.

“You're saying Silas killed my husband?”

Crowe answered carefully.

“I’m saying one of Mercer's men was seen near that herd before it broke.”

Josephine closed her eyes.

Walker took her hand.

The grief she had carried for two years changed shape.

But it no longer owned her.

“Then let's finish what Amos started,” she said.

Crowe nodded.

They rode toward Caldwell.

Silas was already waiting.
