Chapter 13 - Walker Boone Rode After Her Alone

Silas smiled.
“Put the child down.”
Walker obeyed slowly.
Josephine moved toward Sam.
Silas pointed the gun at her.
“Don't.”
Walker stepped between them.
Silas laughed.
“How noble.”
“No,” Walker said. “Practical.”
“Why?”
“Because you still don't have the ledger.”
Silas’s expression changed.
Walker smiled.
“Josephine gave it to me three days ago.”
Silas looked toward her.
That moment was enough.
Josephine grabbed the lantern.
Threw it.
Darkness swallowed the shack.
Walker lunged.
A gun fired.
Josephine screamed.
When Dusty entered moments later, Silas had escaped through the rear window.
Walker lay on the floor.
Blood covered his shirt.
Josephine dropped beside him.
“No.”
Walker opened his eyes.
“I'm all right.”
“You're bleeding!”
“Shoulder.”
Josephine tore his shirt.
The bullet had passed through.
Painful.
Not fatal.
She pressed her forehead against his.
“You idiot.”
Walker smiled weakly.
“You stole my wagon.”
“You mentioned that.”
“I really like that wagon.”
Josephine laughed through tears.
Then kissed him.
“You better live.”
“Planning to.”
“Good.”
“Josephine?”
“Yes?”
“When this is over, don't leave.”
She stared at him.
He continued.
“Not the outfit. Not Sam.”
His hand found hers.
“Me.”
Josephine began crying.
“I won't.”
