Chapter 10 - Charlotte's Last Secret

Charlotte disappeared from public view.
Then she called Sabrina one final time.
“There’s another recording.”
Sabrina’s stomach tightened.
“Of what?”
“Mason.”
They met with counsel.
Charlotte produced an audio file recorded months earlier.
Mason’s voice was unmistakable.
He discussed separating Sabrina from Gavin before the Crestview closing.
He knew who David Miller was.
He knew Sabrina was David's daughter.
Most importantly, he feared she would discover inconsistencies in SwiftFreight’s finances.
The scratched car had been part of a manufactured crisis.
But the recording also revealed something Charlotte had never admitted.
She had agreed to participate.
Sabrina listened in silence.
When it ended, Charlotte was crying.
“I thought Gavin would divorce you. I never thought he would hurt you.”
“You wanted my marriage.”
“Yes.”
“And you helped manufacture a lie to get it.”
“Yes.”
Sabrina stood.
“Then tell the truth publicly where required.”
Charlotte nodded.
“Will you ever forgive me?”
Sabrina looked at her for a long moment.
“Forgiveness isn't something you negotiate.”
Then she left.
The recording changed the legal landscape.
Mason's defense weakened.
Bridget began cooperating.
Charlotte agreed to testify truthfully.
And Gavin finally understood how thoroughly Mason had manipulated his paranoia.
But when one attorney suggested that fact might help rehabilitate his image, Gavin refused.
“Mason manipulated me,” he said. “He didn't control my hands.”
For Sabrina, hearing that mattered.
Not enough to restore the marriage.
But enough to close one wound.
The divorce moved forward.
This time, there were no threats.
No secret liabilities.
No intimidation.
Only lawyers, documents, and signatures.
When Sabrina signed the final papers, her hand did not shake.
She placed the pen down.
Six years were over.
But the fight surrounding SwiftFreight was only beginning.
