Chapter 11 - The Deal Nobody Expected

Crestview did not abandon SwiftFreight.
It rewrote the deal.
The $3.2 billion investment would proceed only if strict conditions were satisfied: corrected financial reporting, independent oversight, governance reforms, replacement of compromised executives, and extensive protections for investors and employees.
Gavin would not immediately return as CEO.
Mason would never return.
David explained the decision to Sabrina privately.
“Thousands of employees didn't create this mess.”
Sabrina nodded.
Destroying SwiftFreight would punish warehouse workers, drivers, dispatchers, mechanics, and families who had nothing to do with Gavin’s choices.
She supported the decision.
When Gavin learned Crestview was still willing to invest, he was stunned.
He requested to speak with David.
David agreed.
The meeting lasted twenty minutes.
“You're doing this because of Sabrina?” Gavin asked.
“No.”
David's voice was cold.
“I'm doing it despite what you did to Sabrina.”
Gavin lowered his eyes.
“Then why?”
“Because a company is larger than the ego of the person who founded it.”
That sentence stayed with Gavin.
Under the revised agreement, SwiftFreight would survive.
But Gavin's unchecked control would not.
For the first time, the company had systems capable of telling him no.
Sabrina thought that might be the most important change of all.
Then another surprise arrived.
The board asked Sabrina to serve as an independent adviser during the transition.
She declined.
Her father was surprised.
“You'd be excellent.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
“Because I've spent six years living inside Gavin's story.”
She smiled.
May you like
“I want my own.”
And for the first time, Sabrina began thinking seriously about what that story might be.
