Chapter 15 - Gavin's Choice
Gavin stood before hundreds of SwiftFreight employees.
He had been offered a path back.
Not as the all-powerful founder.
Not immediately as CEO.
But as a strategic executive under independent oversight.
A year earlier, the limitations would have enraged him.
Now he understood why they existed.
He looked at the employees.
“I built this company,” he began.
Then he paused.
“That sentence used to be one of my favorites.”
A few people shifted.
“The truth is, I started this company. Thousands of you built it.”
He acknowledged leadership failures.
He did not discuss private details of the divorce.
He did not blame Mason.
He did not blame Charlotte.
He accepted the board’s conditions.
Then he announced something unexpected.
He would return in a reduced role.
He would earn trust rather than demand authority.
When Sabrina watched a recording later, she felt no desire to return to him.
But she felt something else.
Relief.
People could change.
Change did not erase what they had done.
It did not create an obligation to reconcile.
But it meant the worst thing a person had done did not necessarily have to become the only thing they would ever be.
Sabrina closed the video.
Then she returned to work.
