Chapter 11 - The Trial

Richard Whitmore's trial became national news.
Clara testified.
She described the crash.
The clinic.
The threats.
The photographs of Noah.
Richard watched without emotion.
Then his attorney asked the question Clara feared.
“If you were truly imprisoned, Mrs. Caldwell, why were you sometimes allowed outside?”
“Because fear doesn't require locked doors.”
She explained that every attempt to escape had been answered with new photographs of Noah.
The jury understood.
Margaret Sloan testified next.
Vanessa testified against her own father.
Richard was convicted on multiple counts.
When the verdict was read, Vanessa cried.
Not because she wanted him free.
Because he was still her father.
Clara understood something then.
People could love someone and still tell the truth about what they had done.
After sentencing, Richard looked toward Vanessa.
“You destroyed your family.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No, Dad.”
Her voice was steady.
“You did.”
Richard was taken away.
Outside the courthouse, hundreds of cameras waited.
