Chapter 5 - The Secret Charles Left Behind

Margaret Caldwell had always been stronger than people assumed.

At seventy-one, she was elegant, quiet, and observant.

Richard Whitmore made the mistake of believing quiet meant weak.

He kept her inside a country house outside Greenwich.

Margaret waited.

She listened.

And when one guard left his phone on a table, she sent Ethan two words.

GREEN HOUSE.

Ethan understood.

His parents had once owned a greenhouse property near Greenwich.

Police arrived before dawn.

Margaret was rescued.

Richard escaped again.

But Margaret carried something with her.

A brass key.

Back at the mansion, she looked at Clara for a long time.

Then she crossed the room and embraced her.

“I am so sorry.”

Clara cried against her shoulder.

Margaret explained everything Charles had hidden.

The brass key opened a private deposit box.

Inside were financial records, recordings, photographs, and the original forensic files from Clara's crash.

Enough evidence to destroy Richard's network.

But when they opened the box, it was empty.

Except for a note.

THANK VANESSA.

Ethan's anger returned.

Vanessa had taken the evidence.

Clara wasn't surprised.

“She ran because she knew we'd discover the truth.”

Margaret shook her head.

“Or she ran because Richard would kill her if she stayed.”

That possibility changed the search.

They found Vanessa twelve hours later.

She had checked into a motel under a false name.

When Ethan entered the room with Detective Reed, Vanessa was sitting on the floor.

Her makeup was gone.

Her expensive dress had been replaced by jeans and a sweatshirt.

Beside her sat a metal case.

“I took it,” she admitted.

Ethan stared.

“Why?”

“To stop my father from getting it.”

She opened the case.

The evidence was still there.

For the first time, Ethan realized Vanessa might not be the villain he had believed her to be.

Not entirely.

She had lied.

She had stayed silent.

She had benefited from Clara's disappearance.

But now she was terrified of the same man they were fighting.

“My father knows I'm helping you,” Vanessa said.

“How?”

“He always knows.”

She handed Ethan a recording.

Richard's voice filled the motel room.

On it, he ordered a police official to alter Clara's dental records.

Detective Reed's face hardened.

“That gets us conspiracy, kidnapping, obstruction, fraud…”

“Not murder,” Vanessa said.

Clara looked at her.

“Margaret Sloan died in that crash.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

Everyone froze.

“What?”

“She survived too.”

Clara stared.

“Where is she?”

Vanessa looked toward Ethan.

“My father has kept her hidden for two years.”

“Why?”

“Because Margaret Sloan knows where the original ledger is.”

Ethan frowned.

“What ledger?”

“The one containing every payment, every politician, every executive, every officer Richard ever bought.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“And there's one name on that ledger that will destroy the Caldwell family.”

Ethan's voice became cold.

“Whose?”

May you like

Vanessa looked directly at him.

“Yours.”
