Chapter 17 - The Woman at the Door

One week before the ceremony, Vanessa appeared at the mansion.

Clara opened the door herself.

Vanessa held no expensive handbag.

No designer sunglasses.

No armor.

“I came to say goodbye.”

“Where are you going?”

“California.”

She had accepted a job with a nonprofit investigating financial exploitation.

Clara almost smiled at the irony.

Vanessa noticed.

“Yes. I know.”

They stood awkwardly.

Then Vanessa handed her an envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Clara and Noah in the ballroom on the night she returned.

Someone had captured the moment Noah wrapped himself around her.

Clara stared at it.

“Where did you get this?”

“One of the photographers.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“I hated that photograph when I first saw it.”

“Why?”

“Because I knew immediately.”

“Knew what?”

“That whatever Ethan and I had was over.”

Clara looked at her.

Vanessa continued.

“Not because he recognized you.”

She pointed toward Noah.

“Because Noah did.”

Clara's eyes filled.

Vanessa turned to leave.

“Vanessa.”

She stopped.

Clara struggled with the words.

“I don't forgive everything.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.”

“But I don't hate you.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

For some reason, that kindness hurt more than anger.

“Thank you.”

Clara watched her leave.

Then she looked at the photograph again.

Noah had recognized her before anyone else.

Before proof.

Before explanations.

Before names.

A three-year-old child had simply known where home was.
