Chapter 8 - The Daughter He Used
The bullet struck Vanessa's shoulder.
She survived.
Richard was arrested before he could fire again.
Inside his vehicle police found the ledger.
For everyone else, it looked like the nightmare was ending.
Clara knew better.
Richard smiled as officers placed him inside the police car.
He looked directly at her.
“You still don't know who pulled you from that car.”
Clara froze.
Richard leaned closer before the door closed.
“Ask your husband.”
Ethan heard him.
“I don't know what he's talking about.”
But Margaret Sloan did.
The person who had pulled Clara from the burning car had been Charles Caldwell.
Ethan's father.
Charles had arrived after secretly following Clara.
He saved her life.
Then he made the terrible decision to hide her.
The revelation complicated everything Clara felt.
Charles had separated her from her family.
But he had also carried her out of a burning vehicle.
He had believed Richard would kill Noah if Clara returned.
He had chosen fear over truth.
And everyone had paid for it.
Richard's arrest led to dozens more.
Executives resigned.
Two officers were charged.
A former medical examiner confessed to altering Clara's identification.
The world learned that Clara Caldwell was alive.
Reporters surrounded the mansion.
Noah didn't care.
He wanted pancakes.
The morning after Richard's arrest, Clara entered the kitchen.
Noah sat at the table wearing dinosaur pajamas.
He looked up.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“Are you staying?”
Clara stopped.
Ethan stood at the stove.
He didn't turn around.
Clara knelt beside Noah.
“I want to.”
“Forever?”
Her eyes moved toward Ethan.
“I don't know yet.”
Noah considered this.
Then he pushed a toy dinosaur toward her.
“You can borrow Mr. Roar until you know.”
Clara laughed through her tears.
Ethan smiled.
It was the first peaceful sound in the Caldwell house in years.
May you like
But peace was not the same as healing.
Clara and Ethan still had to discover whether the love they had buried could survive resurrection.
