Chapter 13 - The Meeting That Became a Trap

Vincent wasn’t holding a gun.
That should have comforted me.
It didn’t.
Men like Vincent didn’t enter rooms alone unless they believed the room already belonged to them.
Dominic stood between us.
Marco positioned himself near Chloe and Ethan.
Evelyn was checking her phone.
“No signal,” she muttered.
Vincent smiled.
“Of course not.”
Caleb stared at his former handler.
“Where’s Reed?”
“Protecting himself.”
“Meaning he left you.”
Vincent’s expression flickered.
Caleb had found the wound.
“You always confused arrogance with intelligence,” Vincent said.
“And you confused loyalty with ownership.”
Dominic spoke.
“Enough.”
Vincent turned.
For years, he had probably expected anger from Dominic.
What he received was disappointment.
That seemed to bother him more.
“Nicholas trusted you,” Dominic said.
Vincent’s smile vanished.
“Nicholas was weak.”
“No.”
Dominic stepped forward.
“He asked questions.”
“Questions destroy families.”
“Lies destroy them first.”
I felt the words.
So did Caleb.
Vincent glanced toward me.
“She’s changed you quickly.”
Dominic didn’t look away.
“She reminded me of something.”
“What?”
“That people who demand silence usually have something worth hearing.”
Vincent laughed.
“Very noble.”
Then the ballroom doors opened behind him.
Three men entered.
Unarmed visibly.
But intimidating.
Marco shifted.
Dominic remained calm.
Vincent gestured toward the table beneath the wedding arch.
“Harper signs Reed’s statement.”
“No,” Dominic said.
Vincent ignored him.
“Caleb gives me the authentication key.”
“No,” Caleb said.
“And Dominic walks away.”
I almost laughed.
“You expect us to believe that?”
Vincent looked at me.
“No. I expect you to understand that refusal gives Reed every reason to arrest all of you.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Reed is already exposed.”
“By evidence you no longer possess.”
Chloe smiled suddenly.
Vincent’s eyes moved to her.
“What?”
She shrugged.
“Nothing.”
Vincent’s face tightened.
He understood.
“You copied it.”
Chloe’s smile widened.
“Maybe.”
Vincent moved toward her.
Dominic blocked him.
“Take another step.”
He didn’t finish the sentence.
He didn’t need to.
Vincent stopped.
Then my phone vibrated.
One bar of signal.
A message from an unknown number:
KEEP HIM TALKING.
I looked at Evelyn.
She had seen it too.
Another message.
REED IS IN CUSTODY.
My heart jumped.
Who?
Then:
AGENT MORALES. INTERNAL AFFAIRS TASK FORCE.
Evelyn exhaled.
Before Reed disappeared with her earlier, she had apparently managed to trigger an emergency distress message to a federal colleague.
She whispered, “I sent our location before he took my phone.”
Vincent watched us.
“What?”
I looked up.
For the first time all night, I smiled at the wrong person.
“You lost.”
His expression hardened.
Then sirens became audible below.
Vincent turned toward the windows.
Caleb laughed quietly.
“No.”
Vincent pointed at him.
“This started because of you.”
“No,” Caleb said. “It started because you believed everyone stayed afraid forever.”
Vincent’s men looked toward the doors.
Dominic stepped aside.
“Leave.”
Two hesitated.
The third immediately walked out.
Vincent stared.
Dominic looked at the remaining men.
“You were paid to protect a business.”
He glanced at Vincent.
“Not die for his ego.”
The other two left.
Vincent stood alone.
His power evaporated in seconds.
No gunfight.
No dramatic battle.
Only a man discovering that fear works until people stop cooperating.
Police and federal officers entered minutes later.
Vincent was arrested.
Ethan was escorted to safety.
Evelyn immediately began arguing with three officials simultaneously.
Marco followed her.
Chloe hugged her brother.
Dominic spoke with investigators.
And I stood alone beneath my wedding arch.
Caleb approached.
“Harper.”
I closed my eyes.
I had imagined hearing him say my name at this exact spot.
Different dress.
Different future.
Different man.
He stopped several feet away.
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
“I don't expect forgiveness.”
“Good.”
He nodded.
Tears appeared in his eyes.
“I did love you.”
“I know that too.”
He looked surprised.
I continued.
“But loving somebody doesn’t excuse deciding their life for them.”
“No.”
“You could have told me.”
“I was scared.”
“So was I.”
He looked down.
“I thought if you knew, you’d leave.”
“I would have.”
Pain crossed his face.
I stepped closer.
“And that was my right.”
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
For three years, I had wondered whether love meant staying.
That night I understood sometimes loving yourself meant leaving even when part of your heart wanted an explanation big enough to erase the damage.
There wasn’t one.
I removed my engagement ring.
Caleb stared.
I placed it in his palm.
“I hope you become someone who never does this to another person.”
His fingers closed around the ring.
“What happens to us?”
“There is no us.”
He nodded slowly.
Then agents approached him.
“Caleb West?”
He looked at me one final time.
“Yes.”
“You need to come with us.”
He didn’t resist.
Before leaving, he turned toward Dominic.
“Take care of her.”
I almost objected.
Dominic did first.
“She takes care of herself.”
I looked at him.
Something warm and painful moved through me.
Caleb smiled sadly.
“Good answer.”
Then he was gone.
The ballroom emptied gradually.
I sat beneath the arch.
Dominic approached.
“You okay?”
“No.”
He sat beside me.
“Good.”
I laughed.
“I hate that response.”
“I know.”
We remained silent.
Then I leaned my head against his shoulder.
He didn’t move.
Didn’t claim the moment.
Didn't put his arm around me until I quietly took his hand and placed it there myself.
His arm settled around my shoulders.
Warm.
Steady.
Safe.
For the first time in three years, no one had decided for me.
I chose.
Then Dominic’s phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
His expression changed.
“What?”
He stood.
I did too.
“What happened?”
He looked at me.
“Reed escaped custody during transport.”
My stomach dropped.
Dominic continued.
“And he took the authentication copy with him.”
The nightmare wasn’t over.
May you like
Worse, Reed now had nothing left to protect.
