Chapter 7 - The Message Caleb Never Meant Me to See

The police did not arrest me that night.
Evelyn made sure of that.
By three in the morning, she had provided enough security footage to establish that I had been inside Dominic’s club when the alleged theft from Vale Logistics occurred.
It didn’t clear me.
But it bought time.
Time became the only currency that mattered.
Caleb disappeared.
Chloe stopped responding.
The countdown reached zero at 4:17 a.m.
Nothing exploded.
Nobody called.
No alarm sounded.
Instead, every fraudulent account connected to my identity emptied simultaneously.
Forty-seven million dollars vanished through a chain of international transfers.
And every digital trail pointed toward Dominic Vale.
By sunrise, federal investigators had begun asking questions.
By breakfast, reporters were outside Vale Holdings.
By nine, my photograph appeared online beneath a headline:
CHICAGO EVENT CONSULTANT LINKED TO VALE FINANCIAL INVESTIGATION.
I stared at my own face on Dominic’s television.
“That’s a terrible picture.”
Dominic looked at me.
“You’re concerned about the picture?”
“My life is collapsing. I’m allowed to be shallow for thirty seconds.”
“Fair.”
The photograph had been taken at a charity gala.
Caleb stood beside me but had been cropped out.
How appropriate.
Evelyn entered with coffee.
“Don’t read comments.”
“I wasn’t planning to.”
“Everyone says that.”
She handed me a cup.
“Federal investigators want to interview you this afternoon.”
My stomach tightened.
“Am I a suspect?”
“Yes.”
I appreciated that she didn’t soften it.
“Dominic?”
“Also yes.”
Dominic buttoned his cuffs.
“He’s used to it.”
“I’m touched by your confidence,” he said.
Marco entered carrying Caleb’s hidden laptop.
“Encryption is open.”
We gathered around the dining table.
Folders filled the screen.
Vale.
Halcyon.
Mercer.
Bennett.
And one called AFTER.
I pointed.
“What’s that?”
Marco opened it.
Inside was an itinerary.
Flights.
Hotels.
A private charter reservation under two aliases.
The departure date was tomorrow.
Passenger names:
C. WEST.
C. MERCER.
I felt numb.
“They were leaving together.”
Dominic scanned the documents.
“Maybe.”
“You think Chloe was forced?”
“I think nothing until evidence supports it.”
I opened another file.
Photographs of passports.
Cash.
A rental property in the Cayman Islands.
Then something else.
A scanned letter.
TO H.B.
My hand froze.
“Open it,” Dominic said softly.
The document appeared.
Harper,
If you're reading this, things went wrong.
I wanted to believe I could finish this without you learning the truth.
I know you will hate me.
Maybe you should.
But nothing was as simple as it looked.
I read faster.
I never planned to hurt you.
I needed your identity because it was clean.
I needed access through your work.
And yes, at first, that was why I approached you.
My vision blurred.
Dominic reached toward the laptop but I stopped him.
“I need to finish.”
Then I made the mistake I wasn't supposed to make.
I fell in love with you.
I laughed through tears.
“How generous.”
Dominic said nothing.
The letter continued.
For three years I tried to build enough money to get us out.
But every move created another obligation.
Nicholas Vale discovered part of the network.
After that, there was no clean exit.
I looked at Dominic.
His entire body went rigid.
I returned to the letter.
Dominic thinks I betrayed Nicholas.
I didn't.
The person responsible still works beside him.
My pulse stopped.
I read the sentence twice.
The person responsible still works beside him.
I turned toward the room.
Marco.
Two guards.
Evelyn.
Dominic.
Everyone suddenly seemed different.
Dominic read over my shoulder.
“Continue.”
There is one person Dominic trusts more than he should.
If I name him here, this file becomes dangerous.
The proof is stored somewhere only Harper can identify.
She has already seen it.
She simply doesn't know what she saw.
The letter ended.
No signature.
No explanation.
Marco swore.
Dominic’s face became unreadable.
I whispered, “Someone beside you.”
“That’s what Caleb claims.”
“You think he’s lying?”
“I think Caleb breathes strategically.”
“But what if he isn’t?”
Dominic looked around the penthouse.
For the first time, I saw suspicion enter his eyes when he looked at his own people.
A terrible thought came to me.
“The bloodstained cloth.”
Dominic’s head turned.
“What?”
“Last night. On the table.”
“What about it?”
“The picture in my purse.”
I ran upstairs to where my belongings had been placed and grabbed the handbag.
Marco followed.
I dumped everything onto the table.
Wallet.
Lipstick.
Receipts.
Wedding notebook.
Then I found a folded business card I didn’t recognize.
On the back was a handwritten symbol.
A circle crossed by three lines.
Dominic went still.
“What?”
He took it.
“That symbol belonged to Nicholas.”
I stared.
“What does it mean?”
“He marked personal investigations with it.”
Marco leaned closer.
“Where did she get that?”
“I don’t know.”
Dominic turned the card.
Embossed on the front:
ASHFORD RESTORATION SERVICES.
I frowned.
“That was one of our wedding vendors.”
Dominic looked at me.
“What did they restore?”
“The antique mirror in the bridal suite.”
Silence.
Caleb’s letter echoed in my head.
The proof is stored somewhere only Harper can identify.
She has already seen it.
She simply doesn't know what she saw.
“The mirror,” I whispered.
Dominic’s gaze sharpened.
“The drive isn’t hidden in the bridal suite.”
I understood.
“It’s hidden inside the mirror.”
Marco grabbed his coat.
Dominic stopped him.
“No.”
Marco looked surprised.
“We need that drive.”
“Yes.”
“Then—”
“Caleb told us there’s a traitor beside me.”
Dominic looked at each person in the room.
“We tell nobody where we’re going.”
Marco’s jaw tightened.
“You think it could be me?”
Dominic’s expression showed something close to pain.
“I think Caleb wants me asking that question.”
The doorbell rang.
Everyone froze.
Security announced a delivery.
No sender.
Dominic ordered it screened.
Minutes later, a small box arrived.
Inside lay my wedding invitation.
The front read:
HARPER BENNETT
&
CALEB WEST
Someone had drawn a black line through Caleb’s name.
Below it, written in red ink:
DOMINIC VALE.
I stared in horror.
Then I opened the invitation.
A photograph fell out.
Dominic picked it up.
It showed Chloe standing outside the Grand Ashford.
Taken less than five minutes earlier.
She was holding something against her chest.
A silver flash drive.
And behind her stood a man I recognized.
One of Dominic’s guards from the nightclub.
The man who had been standing behind him when I first entered the wrong room.
Dominic whispered his name.
“Vincent.”
And suddenly the traitor was no longer an idea.
May you like
He had a face.
