Chapter 9 - The Ledger Hidden Inside My Life

We escaped the warehouse through a loading bay seconds before the security shutters sealed.

Nobody celebrated.

Especially me.

Chloe sat opposite me inside the SUV.

Dominic was beside me.

Marco drove.

For nearly five minutes, the only sound was the engine and Chloe’s uneven breathing.

Finally I said:

“You and Caleb were supposed to get married?”

Chloe looked down.

“Before you.”

My stomach turned.

“How long ago?”

“Four years.”

I laughed once.

No humor.

“You introduced us.”

“I know.”

“You introduced me to your former fiancé?”

“He wasn’t my fiancé anymore.”

“That feels like information friends traditionally exchange.”

“I couldn’t tell you.”

“Why?”

“Because Caleb worked for Vincent.”

Dominic leaned forward.

“Start at the beginning.”

Chloe wiped her face.

“Caleb and I met through Halcyon. I handled marketing contracts. He handled finance. We dated for almost two years.”

I stared at her.

Two years.

How had she hidden an entire relationship?

“Why did you never mention him?”

“He used a different name.”

Dominic’s head turned.

“What name?”

“Caleb Warren.”

Marco swore.

Dominic looked at me.

“West may not be his legal surname.”

Chloe continued.

“He proposed. Then I discovered unusual transfers through one of my client accounts.”

“Northstar?”

“Yes.”

“I confronted him.”

“What happened?”

“He admitted he was moving money for Vincent.”

“Why?”

“He owed him.”

“For what?”

“I never knew.”

Chloe looked at me.

“I ended the engagement. Caleb disappeared for six months.”

“And then?”

“He returned.”

“And you introduced him to me.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“He asked me to.”

Pain turned into disbelief.

“You helped him target me.”

“At first, yes.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

I held up a hand.

I needed to hear it.

“Why me?”

Chloe swallowed.

“You worked for Ashford Events.”

The answer hurt even before she continued.

“You had vendor credentials. Hotel access. Clean financial history. Vincent needed someone who could move through places without attracting attention.”

“So Caleb dated me because of my job.”

“Yes.”

The SUV seemed to shrink.

Dominic’s hand tightened against his knee.

“Then Caleb fell in love with her,” he said.

I looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“Because if everything remained business, Caleb wouldn’t have spent three years trying to keep you ignorant.”

Chloe nodded.

“He did.”

I hated how much I wanted to believe that.

Chloe continued.

“I told myself that made it better.”

“It doesn’t.”

“I know.”

She cried quietly.

“I watched you fall in love with him and kept telling myself he was going to leave the network. Then he proposed to you.”

“So why help him again?”

“Vincent found Ethan.”

Her voice cracked.

“He said if I didn’t cooperate, my brother would pay for what I did four years ago.”

“What did you do?”

“I kept copies of the records.”

Dominic looked at the silver drive in my hand.

“Nicholas’s records?”

“Partly.”

She nodded.

“Nicholas contacted me shortly before he was charged. He knew I had worked on Halcyon accounts.”

Dominic’s face changed.

“You knew Nicholas?”

“I met him twice.”

“And you never came forward?”

“I was scared.”

Dominic’s voice hardened.

“My brother died believing nobody could prove he was innocent.”

Chloe flinched.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Dominic.”

I touched his arm.

He looked at my hand.

So did I.

I withdrew it.

“Let her finish.”

His jaw tightened, but he nodded.

Chloe whispered, “Nicholas gave me a copy of his investigation. I hid it in the Ashford mirror because I knew Vincent had people watching me.”

“Why that mirror?” I asked.

“You had already booked the venue.”

Cold spread through me.

“You used my wedding.”

“I needed somewhere Caleb wouldn’t search immediately.”

“You knew my life was being used for money laundering, and you hid evidence inside my wedding venue?”

“I was trying to protect you.”

I nearly shouted.

“Everyone keeps protecting me by lying to me!”

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could argue.

Back at Dominic’s penthouse, Marco disconnected every network connection before opening the drive.

The first encryption layer loaded.

Directories appeared.

Payments.

Companies.

Dates.

Photographs.

And one folder named N.V.

Dominic stared at it.

I touched his arm again.

This time I didn’t remove my hand.

“Open it.”

He did.

Nicholas Vale appeared on video.

He resembled Dominic.

Older.

Softer around the eyes.

He sat in what looked like an office.

“If Dominic is watching this,” Nicholas said, “then I probably failed.”

Dominic stopped breathing.

Nobody moved.

Nicholas continued.

“Northstar is laundering money through Vale and Halcyon entities. Vincent Russo controls the operational accounts, but I don’t believe he’s the top of the structure.”

Dominic whispered, “Who?”

The video answered.

“I think our father knew.”

Dominic recoiled.

Marco stared at the screen.

Nicholas continued.

“I don’t yet know whether Dad created the system or inherited it. But Vincent is protecting something larger than himself.”

The recording ended.

Dominic stood.

He walked toward the windows.

I gave him space.

For five years he had believed his brother was framed by an outsider.

Now he had learned the corruption may have begun inside his own family.

Chloe whispered, “There’s more.”

Another file.

A ledger.

Hundreds of entries.

Then I noticed familiar names.

Wedding vendors.

Catering companies.

Florists.

Transportation services.

My entire professional world.

I stared.

“They used events.”

Marco understood.

“Temporary companies. Large deposits. Refunds. Vendor transfers.”

Dominic nodded.

“Perfect for laundering.”

My pulse accelerated.

Then I found my name.

HB.

Beside it:

RECRUITED THROUGH C.M.

ACTIVE THROUGH C.W.

UNKNOWING.

I stared at that final word.

Unknowing.

Proof.

Proof that I had not participated intentionally.

Evelyn would clear me.

I almost cried with relief.

Then Marco scrolled lower.

A newer entry appeared.

HB STATUS: COMPROMISED.

DIRECTIVE: REMOVE BEFORE CEREMONY.

The room went silent.

I whispered, “Remove?”

Chloe covered her mouth.

Dominic’s expression became frighteningly calm.

Below it was an authorization code.

VR.

Vincent Russo.

And a date.

My wedding day.

Forty-one days away.

Caleb hadn’t merely known my identity was being used.

He had known someone planned to make sure I never walked away from it.

Dominic looked at Chloe.

“Did Caleb know?”

She shook her head frantically.

“I don’t know.”

But another file answered for her.

A recorded conversation.

Vincent:

“After the ceremony, Harper becomes unnecessary.”

Caleb:

“No.”

Vincent:

“You don't get to object.”

Caleb:

“I said no.”

Vincent laughed.

“You’ve grown sentimental.”

Caleb’s voice became cold.

“If you touch her, I burn everything.”

I closed my eyes.

Caleb had deceived me.

Used me.

Manipulated me.

But somewhere inside all those lies, he had also tried to keep me alive.

Nothing was simple anymore.

Then the recording continued.

Vincent said:

“You have forty-one days to choose, Caleb.”

“Choose what?”

“Her or the network.”

A pause.

Then Caleb answered.

“You already know my choice.”

The file cut off before we heard what choice he made.

And for the first time, I desperately needed to find the man who had destroyed my life.

May you like

Because I needed to ask whether he had also been trying to save it.
