Chapter 6 - The Signature That Could Destroy Me

I chose our wedding venue because of the windows.

That detail felt ridiculous now.

Six months earlier, I had walked into the Grand Ashford Ballroom, seen the Chicago River glittering beneath twenty-foot glass panels, and imagined sunlight hitting my dress as my father walked me toward Caleb.

I had stood in the center of the empty ballroom and cried because it felt perfect.

Caleb had kissed my forehead.

“Whatever you want,” he had said.

Now I understood why he had agreed so quickly.

The venue wasn’t about our wedding.

It was about access.

Dominic enlarged the building map.

“Grand Ashford occupies floors thirty through thirty-three.”

I nodded.

“Our ballroom is thirty-two.”

Marco pointed.

“Vale Holdings owns storage on thirty-one.”

I looked at Dominic.

“You own part of my wedding venue?”

“Indirectly.”

“You never thought that was worth mentioning?”

“I met you four hours ago.”

“Feels longer.”

His mouth almost moved.

Evelyn leaned over the table.

“We’re not going there tonight.”

Dominic nodded.

“No.”

I stared at them both.

“Why not?”

“Because,” Evelyn said, “someone literally sent you instructions pointing toward evidence after framing you for multiple crimes.”

“Yes.”

“That is generally considered bait.”

“We still need what’s there.”

“We need you alive and out of jail more.”

I looked at Dominic.

“Can your people get inside?”

“Yes.”

“Then send them.”

He remained silent.

My stomach sank.

“What?”

“The message says where she says yes.”

“So?”

“There are eighteen event rooms in that building.”

I understood.

“You don’t know exactly where.”

“No.”

“I do.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“Absolutely not.”

I ignored her.

“The bridal suite.”

Dominic frowned.

“I said yes there.”

“To Caleb?”

“No.”

I remembered the afternoon clearly.

Our planner had shown us the ballroom, terrace, and private bridal suite.

Caleb had asked if I liked it.

I had stood beside an antique full-length mirror and said, “Yes. This is it.”

Dominic looked at Marco.

“Blueprints.”

Marco began typing.

The bridal suite sat against the west wall.

Behind it was a narrow utility corridor connected to Vale storage.

Dominic’s face hardened.

“That isn’t coincidence.”

I hugged myself.

“How long was Caleb planning this?”

“Possibly before your engagement,” Evelyn said gently.

I turned toward her.

“No.”

She didn’t argue.

That somehow made it worse.

My relationship replayed inside my head.

Our first date.

Caleb choosing a restaurant near my office.

Our second date when he asked what I did.

Event coordination.

Corporate contracts.

Vendor access.

My work placed me inside hotels, conference centers, private facilities.

Had he loved me?

Or had I been convenient from the beginning?

I walked away from the table.

Dominic followed but kept distance.

“Harper.”

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

“I don’t want anyone telling me it’s going to be okay.”

“I wasn’t going to.”

I looked back.

“What were you going to say?”

“That finding out you were deceived doesn’t make the years unreal to you.”

The words caught me unexpectedly.

“He knew how much I loved him.”

“Yes.”

“He used that.”

“Yes.”

“I feel stupid.”

“You shouldn’t.”

“I ignored things.”

“Everyone does when the alternative is admitting someone they love may not deserve it.”

I studied Dominic.

“Who did you ignore things about?”

His expression closed.

Apparently that question had reached somewhere dangerous.

“Nicholas?”

He looked toward the city.

“My brother trusted the wrong person.”

“Caleb?”

“I don’t know.”

“You think so.”

“I think Caleb was part of something larger.”

My phone lit.

Another message.

This time from Chloe.

HARPER PLEASE TALK TO ME.

Anger surged.

I opened it.

YOU HAVE NOTHING TO SAY TO ME.

Her response came immediately.

CALEB MADE ME DO IT.

I stared at the words.

I almost laughed.

Dominic noticed.

“What?”

“Chloe has entered the predictable phase of betrayal where she claims she had no choice.”

Another message.

PLEASE. HE HAS MY BROTHER.

My anger disappeared.

Chloe had one younger brother.

Ethan.

Twenty-two.

College student.

I looked up.

“Her brother.”

Marco was already searching.

“Last public activity?”

He typed.

“Ethan Mercer hasn’t used his phone or cards since yesterday morning.”

My stomach dropped.

Dominic held out his hand.

I gave him the phone.

“Ask for proof.”

I typed.

PROVE ETHAN IS IN DANGER.

Chloe sent a photo.

Ethan sat in an unfamiliar room.

He looked frightened but unharmed.

A newspaper lay beside him with today’s date.

Another message:

CALEB SAID IF I DIDN'T HELP HIM TONIGHT, ETHAN WOULD DISAPPEAR.

I swallowed.

The kiss replayed.

Chloe’s hand in Caleb’s hair.

Her laughter.

Had she been pretending?

Had I mistaken terror for betrayal?

Then she sent:

I'M SORRY, HARPER. I DID BETRAY YOU BEFORE TONIGHT. BUT NOT THE WAY YOU THINK.

That sentence hurt differently.

I typed:

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

Her reply took almost a minute.

I KNEW ABOUT THE MONEY.

My heart sank.

I DIDN'T KNOW HE USED YOUR NAME UNTIL TWO WEEKS AGO.

Then:

THE NIGHT I FOUND OUT, I TRIED TO WARN YOU.

I remembered.

Two weeks ago Chloe had called at midnight.

She had sounded strange.

She asked whether Caleb had ever requested copies of my tax documents.

I laughed.

Told her wedding planning had made her paranoid.

She had gone silent.

I never asked why.

Another message arrived.

THERE IS A DRIVE IN THE BRIDAL SUITE.

Then:

BUT CALEB KNOWS DOMINIC WILL GO FOR IT.

Dominic read over my shoulder.

“What does that mean?”

Before I could answer, Chloe sent one final message.

HARPER, DON'T GO TO THE ASHFORD.

IT'S NOT A TRAP FOR YOU.

IT'S A TRAP FOR DOMINIC.

Dominic’s face went cold.

At that exact moment, Marco’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed immediately.

“What?”

He put the call on speaker.

A security supervisor spoke rapidly.

“There’s been an emergency activation at the Grand Ashford. Fire system and building access were remotely triggered.”

Dominic looked at the countdown.

One hour, forty-three minutes.

The supervisor continued.

“And somebody just used a Vale executive credential to enter level thirty-one.”

Dominic said, “Whose credential?”

A pause.

Then the answer.

“Yours.”

Everyone looked at Dominic.

He had been beside me for hours.

Somebody had cloned his access.

Evelyn whispered, “They’re creating a record showing Dominic at the scene.”

I stared at the countdown.

The plan became visible.

Frame me for financial crimes.

Frame Dominic for whatever happened at the Ashford.

Connect us.

Destroy us together.

My phone buzzed.

CALEB.

One message.

You chose the wrong man to trust.

I stared at Dominic.

Then typed back:

I chose the wrong man three years ago.

And this time, when Caleb’s reply appeared, there was no apology.

Only a warning.

May you like

Then you'll lose everything with him.
