Chapter 13 - The Eight-Million-Dollar House

The stone house remained empty for almost three years.

I considered selling it.

Then Samantha had an idea.

“Use it for people who need somewhere safe.”

The nonprofit where she worked helped women rebuilding after controlling relationships.

Housing was always a problem.

So we created the Thomas Hale House.

Not Samantha’s house.

Not mine.

Thomas’s.

Six temporary apartments were created inside and around the original residence.

Financial counselors volunteered.

Local businesses donated furniture.

Daniel helped redesign accessibility.

Ben complained about every contractor and secretly loved the entire project.

At the opening, a reporter asked why I would convert an eight-million-dollar residence into transitional housing.

I answered honestly.

“Because the worst thing I ever tried to do with that house was give it to someone who didn’t appreciate what it represented.”

The quote spread online.

Millions saw it.

But the viral attention mattered less than the first family who moved in.

A mother named Rachel arrived with two children and four suitcases.

Her little boy stared at the vineyard.

“Do we get to stay here?”

“For a while,” I said.

“Is it safe?”

I looked toward Ben.

He nodded.

“Yes.”

The boy smiled.

That was worth more than eight million dollars.
