Chapter 17 - The Fifty-Ninth Call

Years after the canceled wedding, I found my old phone in a drawer.

The screen was cracked.

The battery barely worked.

I charged it.

There they were.

Fifty-nine missed calls.

Samantha happened to be visiting.

She saw the screen.

“Oh, God.”

I laughed.

“Remember these?”

“Please destroy that phone.”

“Never.”

“Mom.”

“It’s historical evidence.”

She covered her face.

Then we both started laughing.

Eventually she asked:

“What would have happened if I’d called sixty times?”

“I might have answered.”

“You’re terrible.”

“Possibly.”

Then she became quiet.

“I’m glad you didn’t answer.”

“So am I.”

“If you had fixed everything for me that day, I would have married him.”

I knew.

That was the uncomfortable truth.

Sometimes rescuing someone prevents them from seeing the danger.

I had spent Samantha’s whole life cushioning every fall.

That morning, for the first time, I let her experience consequences.

It saved far more than money.

May you like

It may have saved her future.
