Chapter 15 - A New Generation

Two years later, Samantha called at 5:13 in the morning.
“Mom.”
I sat upright.
“What happened?”
“I’m pregnant.”
I cried before she did.
Months later, a little girl named Andrea Thomas Reyes entered our family.
“Yes,” I protested about the name.
“No,” Samantha did not care.
Daniel called her Annie.
The first time I carried her through the vineyard, I remembered carrying Samantha through those same rows.
Life has a strange way of bringing us back to places we thought we had lost.
Samantha walked beside me.
“Don’t spoil her.”
“I’m her grandmother.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“It absolutely is.”
She laughed.
Then she became serious.
“I’m going to teach her what Dad wrote.”
“What?”
“To build something of her own.”
I kissed Annie’s forehead.
May you like
“Then she’ll be all right.”
