Chapter 14 - The Letter Thomas Never Sent

While renovating the stone house, workers found a metal box behind an old wall.

Inside were papers belonging to Thomas.

Receipts.

Photographs.

And a letter addressed to Samantha.

He had written it shortly before he died.

He never sent it.

My hands shook as I gave it to her.

She read silently.

Then cried.

Thomas had written about the vineyard.

About work.

About me.

But one paragraph changed her.

Your mother will give you everything if you let her. Don’t let her. Build something of your own so you can stand beside her, not behind her.

Samantha handed me the letter.

“Dad knew you too well.”

“He did.”

“He knew me too.”

We framed a copy.

The original went into our family safe.

From then on, Samantha stopped sending wedding repayments.

Not because she gave up.

Because she had repaid every dollar she reasonably could.

The rest, we agreed, had become tuition for the most expensive lesson either of us had ever learned.
