Chapter 18 - What Fifty-Nine Calls Bought Us

On my seventieth birthday, the vineyard workers organized a surprise dinner.

I hated surprises.

They knew that.

They did it anyway.

Long tables filled the courtyard.

Daniel cooked.

Badly.

Samantha corrected him.

Ben criticized everyone.

Annie ran between the tables wearing tiny red boots.

Richard Whitmore attended too.

Over the years, he and I had developed an unlikely friendship.

He never asked me to forgive Greg.

I respected that.

Natalie came with Noah.

Samantha hugged her.

There had been a time when such a scene would have seemed impossible.

Now it simply felt human.

Messy.

Complicated.

Real.

After dinner, Samantha stood.

“Oh, no,” I said.

“Oh, yes.”

She held up a glass.

“My mother once received fifty-nine calls from me in two hours.”

Everyone laughed.

“I was having the worst day of my life.”

“You deserved it,” Ben shouted.

More laughter.

Samantha pointed at him.

“Thank you, Ben.”

Then she looked at me.

“I thought she was punishing me.”

Her voice softened.

“She was teaching me the difference between love and surrender.”

The courtyard became quiet.

“I used to think my mother’s greatest gift was an eight-million-dollar house.”

She shook her head.

“It wasn’t.”

I felt tears coming.

“Her greatest gift was finally telling me no.”

She raised her glass.

“To Mom.”

Everyone repeated it.

I looked around at the people gathered beneath the lights.

Family.

Workers.

Friends.

People who had stayed.

People who had changed.

People who had earned their place.

That was wealth.

Not the house.

Not the land.

Not forty-seven million dollars.

May you like

This.
