Chapter 10 - The Person Inside the Hospital

Detective Ortiz traced the leak.
Someone had accessed my employee records at St. Anne's.
My address.
Emergency contact information.
Work schedule.
The access occurred weeks before my parents appeared.
The employee responsible was a temporary administrative contractor named Nolan Pierce.
I recognized the surname.
The man in Grandma's photograph beside Caleb was Daniel Pierce.
Nolan was his son.
Police questioned him.
Nolan claimed Caleb had contacted him saying he wanted to reconnect with his estranged sister.
He insisted he didn't know about Elise.
Maybe that was true.
Maybe not.
Then hospital security discovered something worse.
Nolan had accessed my schedule repeatedly.
Including the night my parents confronted me.
He knew exactly when I would enter the parking garage.
The confrontation hadn't been chance.
Someone had arranged it.
Nolan was dismissed while the investigation continued.
But the revelation changed me.
For years, I had believed safety meant hiding.
Changing my name.
Locking doors.
Avoiding questions.
Now I understood hiding had never been the same as healing.
So I did something terrifying.
I told my closest coworkers the truth.
Not every detail.
Enough.
I expected judgment.
Instead, one nurse hugged me.
Another said:
“You should've never had to carry that alone.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Because sometimes one sentence can wound a person for twelve years.
And sometimes another can begin putting them back together.
But the biggest test was still coming.
Elise's hearing began Monday.
And Caleb would be in the same courtroom.
May you like
For the first time since I was fifteen, I was going to look directly at my brother.
