Chapter 8 - The House Nobody Knew Was Mine

Grandma Ruth had owned a small house outside Columbus.
She left it to me through a trust.
My parents never knew.
Neither did Caleb.
The house had been rented for years, and the trust had quietly accumulated income.
I wasn't wealthy.
But for the first time, I had security.
I visited the property.
It was modest.
Two bedrooms.
Blue shutters.
A maple tree in front.
Inside, I found another letter.
A safe home changes everything.
I sat on the empty living-room floor and cried.
Grandma had understood exactly what I needed.
Not revenge.
Safety.
I moved in three months later.
Elise helped me paint the kitchen.
Detective Ortiz stopped by once with coffee.
Life slowly became ordinary.
Then my mother appeared at the gate.
She looked exhausted.
“Mara.”
I didn't open it.
“What do you want?”
“To apologize.”
“You've apologized.”
“Not for everything.”
She held an envelope.
“There is something else you need to know.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
“Caleb wasn't the first person your father protected.”
I stared at her.
May you like
And just like that, the past opened another door.
