Chapter 7 - The File With My Name

The folder contained photographs of me.
Not recent ones.
Childhood photographs.
School photographs.
Copies of letters.
Medical notes Grandma Ruth had secretly collected.
But there was also a video recorded twelve years earlier.
The camera showed our kitchen.
Dad stood beside Caleb.
Mom was crying.
I wasn't there.
The timestamp showed it had been recorded hours after I disappeared.
Caleb said:
“She'll come back.”
Dad answered:
“No. She won't.”
“How do you know?”
“Because Ruth helped her.”
I stared at the screen.
My parents had known.
They hadn't wondered whether I was alive.
They knew Grandma had helped me escape.
And they had chosen not to contact me because contacting me risked exposing Caleb.
Then Dad said something worse.
“If Mara stays gone, this disappears.”
This.
Not me.
The scandal.
The evidence.
The inconvenience.
I stopped the video.
“I've seen enough.”
Ortiz nodded.
Outside the interview room, Elise waited.
“You okay?”
“No.”
Then I surprised myself.
“But I will be.”
Caleb eventually faced multiple charges connected to Elise, evidence tampering, stalking and other conduct investigators uncovered.
Dad faced consequences for obstruction.
Mom cooperated.
But I didn't measure justice by sentences.
I measured it differently.
For the first time, everyone believed me.
Yet the story wasn't finished.
Because Grandma Ruth had hidden one final envelope inside Box 317.
On the front she had written:
OPEN ONLY WHEN YOU NO LONGER NEED THEM TO BELIEVE YOU.
That night, I opened it.
Inside was a deed.
And suddenly I learned Grandma hadn't only left me evidence.
May you like
She had left me a place to start over.
