Chapter 5 - The Father Who Always Chose Him

Dad was arrested for obstruction.

Investigators determined he had moved evidence from Caleb's truck.

He claimed he was confused.

Scared.

Trying to protect his family.

Detective Harris asked him:

“When were you planning to protect Elise?”

Dad had no answer.

Mom finally began talking.

Caleb had frightened people for years.

My parents paid debts.

Repaired damage.

Made excuses.

Every rescue taught him the same lesson.

Someone would always clean up afterward.

Then Elise appeared.

She had discovered evidence involving Caleb's former girlfriends.

One had accused him of stalking.

Another had suddenly moved away.

A third had withdrawn a complaint.

Elise began collecting information.

She planned to go to police.

Caleb discovered what she was doing.

Then investigators recovered GPS data from Elise's phone.

A motel near the West Virginia border.

Police found her clothing there.

Medication.

A notebook.

But no body.

Then the motel clerk gave them something none of us expected.

“She left alive.”

Security footage confirmed it.

Elise had escaped.

She had taken a rideshare to a bus station.

Then disappeared deliberately.

For the first time, we had hope.

Three days later, my phone rang.

“Is this Mara?”

A woman's voice.

“Yes.”

“My name is Elise Porter.”

I nearly dropped the phone.

She was alive.

But terrified.

“Elise, where are you?”

“I can't tell you.”

“Police can protect you.”

“Caleb knows people.”

“Detective Ortiz can help.”

Silence.

Then she said:

“Caleb thinks you have something.”

“My laptop?”

“No.”

“What?”

“Something Ruth left you.”

I looked around my apartment.

Then my eyes stopped on an old dictionary.

Grandma had mailed it when I was sixteen.

I pulled it down.

Something rattled inside the spine.

A tiny key fell out.

Stamped into it:

317.

A safe-deposit box.

Inside Box 317 were years of evidence.

And a letter.

Mara, if you're reading this, someone finally forced the truth into daylight.

But beneath the letter was a photograph.

Caleb stood beside another man.

Detective Harris recognized him.

The man had once been questioned about another missing woman.

And suddenly Elise's disappearance looked like one piece of something much larger.

Then Ortiz received a call.

“They found Caleb's truck.”

“Is he there?”

“No.”

“Who is?”

She looked at me.

May you like

“Your mother.”
