Chapter 14 - Grandma's Other Children

Elise stared at the photograph.

“My mother never told me.”

Her mother, Patricia Porter, had been seventeen when Grandma Ruth helped her escape an unsafe home.

Years later, Patricia had donated boxes from Ruth's estate after her death.

That was how Elise eventually obtained the documents that exposed Caleb.

The coincidence wasn't really coincidence.

Grandma had created a chain.

She helped Patricia.

Patricia raised Elise.

Elise found the evidence.

Elise challenged Caleb.

And that brought the truth back to me.

I visited Patricia.

She cried when I told her who I was.

“Ruth talked about you.”

“What did she say?”

“That she had one regret.”

My throat tightened.

“What?”

“She didn't get you out sooner.”

I looked away.

Patricia squeezed my hand.

“She loved you.”

“I know.”

For years, I had defined my childhood by the people who failed me.

Now I began defining it by the one person who hadn't.

The Ruth Bell Fund expanded.

Elise joined the advisory board.

Rachel volunteered occasionally.

Even Mom donated anonymously.

I knew because I recognized her handwriting.

I didn't return the money.

But I didn't call her either.

Healing didn't require pretending everything was repaired.

Some bridges remained damaged.

You could acknowledge them without crossing.

Then, almost eighteen months after Caleb's arrest, I received notice that the major court proceedings were approaching resolution.

Reporters called again.

I ignored them.

Caleb sent me a letter.

I almost threw it away.

Instead, I opened it.

The first line read:

You got what you wanted.

I laughed.

Because he still didn't understand.

I had never wanted his destruction.

I wanted my freedom.

And those were not the same thing.

At the bottom he had written:

You'll always be a Whitmore.

I folded the letter.

The next morning, I filed paperwork I had considered for years.

This time, Mara Bell wouldn't merely be the name on my apartment buzzer.

May you like

It would legally be mine.
