Chapter 11 - Daniel's Empty Apartment

Daniel's new apartment was tiny.
I visited one Sunday.
He had one sofa, a cheap table, and no ocean view.
“I deserve the downgrade,” he joked.
“No. That's not the lesson.”
“What is?”
“That possessions aren't character.”
He looked at me.
“Dad would say that.”
“He probably did.”
Daniel had started rebuilding his finances.
Slowly.
Honestly.
He was paying me every month.
Sometimes the amount was small.
I never complained.
Consistency mattered more than size.
Before I left, I noticed something on his wall.
A framed photograph.
Me and Robert standing in front of the beach house the year we bought it.
Underneath, Daniel had written:
THEIRS BEFORE IT WAS EVER MINE.
I didn't mention it.
May you like
But I cried in the car.
